Editorial Reviews

CD Description
The cerebral and sardonic poetry and alt-country of David Berman is once again at the fore for the sixth Silver Jews studio album. Settling down with a steadier line-up than previous recordings (which featured, among others, Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich of Pavement), 'Lookout Mountain Lookout Sea' is a collection of more concept-led songs with more epic directions. The homespun nature and lyrical intricacies remain, but there's a definite musical step forward for the unashamedly low-fi indie heroes. Older fans will revel in the band's newfound expansiveness while newcomers will be impressed with the deftly woven narratives within.

Not wanting to indulge in hyperbole but this is quite brilliant...5
Well I have to admit I had completely lost the Silver Jews before earlier this year when I saw them put in a magisterial performance at the Primaverasound Festival in Barcelona. Much of the set comprised of this record. And what a record it is. Somewhere between Kinky Friedman and Nick Cave, David Berman takes his place amongst the pantheon of inspired lyricists. Every song on this record has something going for it. It is one of those great efforts that rewards you with repeated listenings. The lyrics are picturesque and witty, the melodies are beautiful and the overall execution is nigh on perfect. Its the ultimate modern country record. It manages the rare balance of being incredibly smart whilst still amazingly soulful. This is one record that will not get filed away. And now having acquianted myself with the back catalogue it pulls of the unheard of trick of an artist producing their best record 6 albums in. If there are any essential purchses in 2008, this is surely one. God bless The Joos. Buy.

'fore I knew what I said, I said "killer cut"...LOLOL!!!5
Hearing the Silver Jews have a new album out always leads to a short and dangerous drive to the nearest record shop for me. I can get from work to Avalanche records in Edinburgh in about 40 minutes if I push it: they close at 6...

I thought I had got passed this stuff now. Good God, my 'co-workers' give me funny looks as I try to tell them about David Berman's band - how funny and memorable his words are and how he puts them sleekly in such great tunes.
This is always going to be not so mainstream: unfair but true.

This one is pretty upbeat in comparison to the earlier records. David Berman is feeling better now. Whew!
:-)

Pretty much a masterclass in song writing, if you like this sort of thing!5
This is a career highlight; David Berman has put his foot down behind the wheel of the Silver Jewsmobile to great effect. For me this album puts him up there with those Sons of Lee Marvin (Jim Jarmusch et al) as modern masters of their art. Sample lyrics: "You got Tennessee tendencies and chemical dependencies, you make the same old jokes and malaprops on cue"

This is a must for fans and anyone interested in hearing a legend while its still being made!

Well packaged with a great cover and hand written lyric sheet. Also comes with play along guitar tabs, "just put your fingers on the Polar bears noses"!

Americana pop folk rock country, sing-a-long Grand New Opry crickling and crackling on your tongue!
