Half-good
When I started watching wrestling with the Rumble in 2000, I was fascinated by the Hardy Boyz, or rather Jeff. Imagine my amazement when they were split from tag competition into singles on two different shows, and Matt was the one to become popular, while Jeff painted himself in day-glo before disappearing into obscurity. The two documentaries presented here reflect this split in talent perfectly. While the Matt disc is interesting, insightful and concise, the Jeff disc is rambling, showy and laughable.
Matt's story involves his early aspirations to become a promoter, as well as a performer. It deals with his early days in Jeff's shadow, to his rise to popularity as Version 1 and his messy breakup with Lita and falling out with Edge. It offers plenty of comments from many in the business, such as J.R. and friends Shannon Moore and Shane Helms. It details his brief firing and finishes with his US title reign and hints at bigger things for the future. Jeff's disc deals, primarily, with his stupid 'artwork'. His music, a cross between Gary Numan and NO TALENT, is hilarious. He talks, at length, about his aluminium sculptures and paintings. The disc handily glosses over the most interesting aspects of his career, mianly his drug abuse, release from WWE and his years wandering through the independents while his brother was appearing at Wrestlemanias. Theres little insight into his wrestling ambitions, influences, or even the profound influence he's had on a younger generation of competitors. All in all, he comes across as a bit of a fool. I don't know whether to blame WWE for focusing on this (as it allowed them not to feature their rival company, TNA) or Jeff for being so silly.
I didn't watch the matches but I'm sure they're entertaining enough. You never could fault the brother in-ring, especially back in the glory days of late '99- early 2000. But, as with most WWE DVD packages, this really fails to deliver on the gritty stuff, coming across more like a big love-in and glossing over anything remotely interesting. Worth a rent, but don't buy it.
