Editorial Reviews

CD Description
As one of the leading voices and forefathers in contemporary FM rock music, a Tom Petty collection such as this is a masterclass of the genre. Tracks such as 'Stop Draggin' My Heart Around' and 'American Girl' show Petty to be both an engaging performer and versatile writer, the former being taken on by Stevie Nicks for her debut solo album. Cuts from 'DamnThe Torpedoes', perhaps Petty's most acclaimed record, include 'Here Comes My Girl' and the recalcitrant 'Don't Do Me Like That', both excellent examples of his craft.

Customer Reviews

Nothing new here but still a fantastic janglefest4
OK, so this is virtually identical to the 1993 Greatest Hits release, the only difference being that 'Something In The Air' is replaced by 'Stop Draggin' My Heart Around'. The tracks relate to the years 1976-1991 and contain some truly superb, radio friendly, instantly memorable tunes full of jangly guitars and hummable melodies. These are from times when music was played with instruments rather than keyed into a computer. It shows. The songs are a pure joy to hear. Uplifting to say the least.
So, why would you buy this instead of the other Greatest Hits? A good enough reason for me (but probably not for most people) is that it's been remastered. The original sounded pretty good but this one is punchier and fuller sounding. Probably not enough reason for most but if you don't already own a TP compilation of the MCA years then this is the one to go for. Perhaps they could've stretched to a couple more songs for this release.
The music gets an undisputed 5 stars but overall a star is knocked off for the pointlessness of this release. The 1993 edition is still in print and half the price. For most folks, the new artwork and remastering will mean nothing. Also, there's a great 2CD compilation entitled 'Anthology - Through The Years' from 2000 that contains 2CDs of MCA output, also with remastered sound.
So come on Universal, start releasing stuff that isn't already available - your archives are big enough.

Great music, very average compilation3
Tom Petty -- Great music but like any compilation, it's impossible to fit this artist's prolific output into a single album. it's also a silly price when you can get many of TP's albums on CD for £2.50 - £3.00.

What makes much more sense is to buy the original albums. There's such a weight of really good material on the originals that the compilation just doesn't make sense. Start with "Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers" and progress through "You're gonna get it" "Damn the torpedoes" and "Hard Promises". Don't forget "Full moon fever" and "Into the great wide open".

The only worthy TP compilation would be a full box set of the albums, the originals are really that good.

Some great songs but..... 3
...something dreadful has been done to the audio. Load any track from this album into a wave editor to see exactly what I am referring to.

An obscene abuse of the dynamic range of CD. Record companies should be ashamed of mutilating music like this.
