Product Description

Combining spectacular Hollywood-style stunts with a gripping storyline, Wheelman provides an adrenaline-fueled, cinematic thrill ride guaranteed to leave you breathless. Vin Diesel stars as an undercover agent and highly skilled driver who must infiltrate the Barcelona underworld to gather intelligence surrounding a covert heist. Posing as a driver-for-hire, he ends up caught in a crossfire of corruption and chaos while trying to stay one step ahead of local law enforcement and rival gangs.

A Game That Plays Like a Movie
Video games based on movies are not rare, but what is rare is a video game developed to look and play like a movie, and that is exactly what Wheelman is. Featuring the image and voice of action star Vin Diesel as undercover agent and driver for hire Milo Burik, in an entirely digital performance, Wheelman was originally planned as a launching pad for a new movie franchise of the same name. Until then, Wheelman the video game will stand as a brash celebration of car chases and on-screen collisions that do not need a movie to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Open World Gameplay and Wheelman Moves
First and foremost Wheelman is a driving game, but in its open world gameplay universe players can go anywhere, whether behind the wheel or on foot. As with other open world games, action is split between mission play, event and freeplay, with the breakdown working out to about 80% of it taking place behind the wheel or on motorcycles, to 20% while on foot. Also, Wheelman features fully destructible environments, which allows players take advantage of special in-game features, known as 'Wheelman Moves.' Designed to illustrate the game's philosophy which considers vehicles as the ultimate weapons, these features include the Vehicle Melee mode, which allows for quick and devastating vehicle sideswiping attacks; Airjacking, which allows you to jump from car to car w

Simply smashing fun!4
I expect all the other reviews describe The Wheelman as a Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) clone/knockoff... well, I can't say that it isn't. The comparisons are glaring. The Wheelman played by Vin Diesel is called Milo Burik (remarkably similar to Niko Bellic?). I played GTA 4 all the way through and consider it an excellent, 5 star game, clever in so many aspects and very difficult to match. Driving, shooting and criminal escapades in an open-world city (a very empty Barcelona this time) accessed through a PDA map with set missions following a loose story line and a choice of side missions are all obvious similarities. However, having played the game through, I feel that other reviews have been overly harsh.

Introducing "Air-Jack"...witness Vin Diesel actually leaping from a speeding car onto the roof of an equally fast vehicle in front, smashing into the window feet first and booting the driver out, before zooming off again with a minimal drop in speed.

Speed is good! it increases your Power Meter, letting you perform special moves (Boost, Aimed Shot and Cyclone which involves a 360° spin while precision firing). If you drive too slowly, the meter loses power and a message tells you off! Smashing things up is good too. As in the Burnout games (Burnout Paradise (PS3))you can sideswipe your pursuing enemies and get them off your tail with a takedown.

On the down side, the story line lacks sense and missions link together in a rather absurd way with Milo swapping sides with rival gangs so often that it's a wonder he didn't get killed in my confusion. The main story line is also rather short at around 8 hours, but there is a lot of room to explore the rest of the game in the side missions.

This game doesn't take itself too seriously, it is nowhere near GTA in breadth, but it is addictive, speeding, smashing FUN!

Diesel Powered4
This review is based on the full game and not the downloadable demo from the Sony Online Store.

Let's get straight to the point here. I bought Wheelman on the strength of the playable demo. What we have here is a familiar gang-war type scenario, set in Barcelona complete with strained Spanish accents, a Scotsman and a New Yorker with a very deep voice. The game stars a virtual Vin Diesel (and the likeness is great in every aspect) as Milo Burik (the so-called Wheelman) who comes out of his retirement to save a woman from his past which leads him to Barcelona. The game has 31 story missions and 105 or so side-missions to chew on, but you can ignore them and just play the main game if you wish. The game is of course mainly driving based, but there are on-foot sections requiring the use of several big-time weapons of mass destruction. There is also a great little gimmick of being able to slow down time to make every bullet count, and to help you shoot the tires off vehicles in the most spectacular way. You can't over use that ability either as you have to earn the right to be this cleaver in the first place. Driving a variety of vehicles, which you can hijack by dragging the driver from their seat, or "airjack" by leaping from your vehicle to the one in front as in Sony's PSP effort Pursuit Force, is much fun. Your car/van/bike is your weapon and slamming your vehicle into a pursuing enemy is a way to bring them to a halt, as well as shooting the tires and taking out the driver using your focus ability to give the impression of slowing down time. The story is a little lame and we've heard it all too often. The voice acting is reasonable and the cut-scenes are pretty good too, with nothing lingering on too long so getting to the action is quick for those that cannot wait! Graphics are good but not great, even in 720p HD, with attention to detail okay - no swaying palm trees here or changing weather paterns. As for the populated Barcelona, it's pretty sparse to be honest with few people to run down or murder in cold blood (actually, you can't shoot anyone other than your intended target so random killings for fun aren't possible). Despite a few niggles, this is a fun driving/shooting sand-box game, and you could do a lot worse with your cash. It's pretty easy to finish if you leave out the side-missions and there is replay value, at least for me. It's GTA watered down and in a lot of ways that makes it easier to swallow.

If Diesel is your choice of fuel, fill up now and pay on the way out.
