Nothing Wrong With An Old Hat
Anyone who knows me well would be certain to tell you about my fondness for hats.

I am a Wolf who owns and wears many hats. More than fifty in The Cave at the last count.

A veritable Imelda Marcos of hats.

My favorite hat is a very old hat. It once belonged to a woodcutter.
How I came to own it must, to some degree, be left to your imaginations.

Suffice to say that its' acquisition involved a totally justified act of revenge
on my part for the death of my great-great grandfather, following a complex
and regrettable chain of events which has become remembered over time in
woodland lore as 'The Red Bonnet Incident'.

It is a brown and somewhat battered brown felt fedora with two holes
cut in the top to accomodate my ears.

Which brings me in a roundabout sort of way to Ms Khan's new album 'Funk This'.

Nothing wrong with an old hat then. This I think we have comfortably established.

The question for us here then must be - Does Ms Khan still give good hat ?

I saw her for the first time in 1972, singing in a small but not insignificant
musical venue in deepest, darkest Essex.
The stage was low and I was hunkered down at the front witnessing one of
the most electrifying performances of my young and hairy life at that time.

The sweat flew all around from her wildly flailing mane drenching everyone
standing in the first two rows. I did not wash for a fortnight.

The eleven tracks which make up this new album are a gift.

The voice is still remarkably intact all the way through its extensive
and extraordinary register. Soulful; technically brilliant and retaining
the capacity to strip paint off ceilings.
This lady can still throw down a five-part harmony in the studio
like there's no tomorrow !

Highlights must include funky opening track 'Back In The Day' - Vintage Khan.

'One For All Time' - a gorgeously soulful ballad.
This track, together with 'Angel' are two of the very best
vocal performances of her 35+ year career.

'Disrespectful' is a storming and worthy duet with Ms Blige
which could knock the spots off a leopard.

Ms Khan's take on the small purple one's 'Sign Of The Times'
gives the original a real run for its' money.

'Ladies Man' - soft, sexy and full of sweet soul honey.

'Hail To The Wrong' - another vintage funktastic classic.

The band is splendid. The production is cool, slick and accomplished.

Trust me - old or not we all need a hat like this in our lives.

The real deal - A true Diva indeed.

The Diva is Back!
In my honest opinion this is Chaka's finest work in quite a few years. Soulful, funky, raw....No "over production" on this set, which allows Chaka to lead the way with her unique vocal talents.

Funk This, "House" was MUCH funkier....
I adore Chaka Khan. She is one independant woman with guts. Just look at her track record.
She left Warner Bros and started her own record label in 1998, and recorded (with the help of Prince) "Come to My House", which was hailed by the critics and justly so. It was criminally buried because there was no promotional backing (being her own small record label).
Forward 9 or so years, CK signs to Sony. Funk This is a brilliant CD dont get me wrong, but I'm strangely suspicious that it has won two grammy's when "House" was a far superior record.
All hail Chaka anyway, because for me, she has finally gotten the grammy's she should've had 10 years ago........
