Room with a view
Years ago I bought a double vinyl LP called Headz Vol.1 ;A Soundtrack of Experimental beats And Jams which is one of my favourite compilations ...well ever. The reason I mention this is that the music on that album ..primarily obscure sound collages pinioned by lugubrious beats- remind me very much of Koushiks Out My Window. This album is it's more laid back amenable cousin but the resemblance is there and I'm willing to bet the name DJ Shadow crops up in more than one review , not counting mine of course.
Koushik Ghosh describes himself as an environmental mathematician which brings to mind some wretched hippy playing the abacus but fear not for Koushik has merged a head spinning array of influences to create a dazzling meld of sounds and textures. Not only that the Canadian singer/songwriter /producer has the nous , talent whatever to create music that could be classed as easy listening or chill out but with a sonic depth that be more easily allotted to something .....well louder I suppose.
Merging titbits of soul , pop , jazz, hip hop, with even a discernible frisson of shoe gaze indie rock the songs are drenched in reverb and often given a juicy psychedelic twist . Sometimes it is genuinely weird .The title track has taut horror movie strings overlaid with keyboards akin to a stuttering cement mixer while dead monks chant on a loop . "Floating On " is an unsettling ambient drift while "Morning Comes" is ushered in on a single droning note with the layers added incrementally . Tiny sparkling chimes , a background rumble and Koushiks wispy voice filtered in and out of the mix. "Be With" has funky bass, gregarious percussion and queasy circuitous strings. Best of all "Lyin In The Sun" fuses hip swaying percussion with Ghosh,s most forceful vocal, raspy brass and the sort of chiming incandescence last heard on a Sigur Ros album. The strange noise -like sandpaper on a balloon is a nice touch as well." Welcome " is the finest 1.11 of rapturous sound I've heard in many a year while "Corner Of Your Smile" shimmers like a silver stringed heat haze.
Pick just about any track off Out My Window though and there is something to enjoy. It's unlikely you'll be whistling anything of here on the street ( and if you try to whistle See You" I want to watch though having said that "Nothings The Same" does have whistling in it though its whistling like someone doing it while their lips have been super-glued to a furnace door) but this is music of rare individuality . Quirky little sound scapes inaurated and polished till they shine lustrously . Musical radiance like the song says "Bright And Shining"- like the sun on the albums cover.

Yes, people DO still make inventive music.
Koushik's debut full length is a beautiful piece of work, and one for the open-minded music lover out there. The Canadian producer weaves soul samples with etherial psychadelic vocals and then chucks the whole lot over some nice chunky old school breakbeats. The result is nothing short of spectacular. If you want references, try this on for size - imagine Avalanches hooking up with Spacemen 3, travelling back to 1964, recording for the next 10 years, then coming back to the future and getting DJ Shadow to remix it round Plaid's place. It sounds everything and nothing like that. GET ON IT!
