Amazon.co.uk Review
The latest classic tale to be dragged up to date by the BBC, the decision to revive Merlin as primetime entertainment was just about rewarded, even if it does manage to ride roughshod over history in the process.
For just as it did with its updating of Robin Hood for Saturday nights, the legend of Merlin has undergone something of an overhaul here, and sticklers for authenticity will have plenty to pick at. The occasional narrative bumps don’t help, either, and the special effects clearly leave it thirsting for a Doctor Who-like budget.
And yet, warts and all, Merlin really is quite good fun. The BBC has wisely wheeled in some experienced thesps to work alongside the likes of Colin Morgan in the title role, with Richard Wilson and Anthony Head happy to join in the fun. Don’t knock the aforementioned Morgan, though: he carries the show well on his young shoulders, and has a blossoming career ahead of him.
This DVD pack contains the first six episodes of Merlin, and they gradually introduce us to the land of Camelot, and the mysterious characters that lie within. They also offer a solid amount of rounded family entertainment, that sets the scene for an intriguing second half of the series. What’s more, there’s just enough here to suggest that young Merlin may have further adventures even beyond then. --Jon Foster

Rather Like Cream Cakes...
You see a cream cake. You know it's silly, sickly, and not good for you, but you have to have it.
Merlin is my cream cake. It's cheesy, fluffy, ruins the traditional Arthurian legends, is loaded to the gills with poor special effects, high levels of improbability and daft one liners, but...
But I love it. I shoudln't, but I do. Reality has never been my forte and forty five minutes watching the adventures of a young Merlin with real character, and a young Arthur who, unlike most of his predecessors on screen, actually does something heroic once in a while, just makes my week.
Magic, from start to finish. And an absolute oasis in the desert of current tv schedules. There should be room for imagination, and young kids need stuff like this to bring the Arthur legends to them before they are forgotten. As a kid I longed to find Camelot, to ride out on a horse and fight monsters (not bad, for a girl, I learned to ride but never stumbled over any griffins), and I'm delighted someone is bringing this dream to the next generation.
Thank you BBC for finally spending my licence fee on something I actually want to watch. Bring on Season 2, and more dragons this time!
It's A Kind of Magic?
Containing the first 6 episodes of the new BBC Series. Much like the BBC series Robin Hood this takes all the characters from the legend but gives them a re-imagining. Merlin is introduced to us entering Camelot which is ruled by Uther and who has declared the practising of magic punishable by death. We are also introduced to Arthur, Gwen & Morgana as other principal characters.
The special effects are well done and certainly not over used, the stories themselves are well written and move along at a fairly quick pace and i didn't find myself getting bored or looking at the clock to see how long was left. this is a really fun series so far and we can only see with volume 2 whether it continues as it has begun

Robin Hood - Series 2 [2008]
It fills that Saturday Gap!
Calling all Doctor Who, Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures Fans put the kettle on (or cook your tea like my family) Sit Back, Relax and enjoy 45 minutes of Merlin! This sometimes cheesy, exciting, gripping, makes the camelot history even more complicated in 45 minutes drama is just what you need to replace the Doctor Who gap on the saturday night.
It follows the same tension as Doctor Who with Authurs sometimes heroic and idiotic moves and Merlin's secret runs intend to follow his destiny protecting Aurthur and hey there may be a replacement Rose in Morgana shows a prommising thriller (Maybe not so) Historic Drama to give you a laugh, eyes kept to the screen for a whole 45 minutes long experience the same you get with Doctor Who, Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures but for those who are not a fan of these just sit back relax and watch Merlin it is a MUST SEE 5 stars for the 2008 reincarnation of Merlin.
