Customer Reviews
Good software, bad marketing
A few months ago I succumbed to Serif's highly effective marketing and bought a copy of Page Plus 11. A DTP programme roughly equivalent to what Microsoft Publisher was five or more years ago for a tenner? Not a bad deal at all. I eventually got sick of the "register me" nag screen and registered the program. Not long after that I had a phone call from Serif trying very hard to sell me version 13 of Page Plus for something like £99. The caller couldn't believe that I found version 11 quite sufficient for my needs. Leaflets and small booklets are easy enough to produce and the .PDF file support is wonderful. I'd recommend Page Plus 11 to anyone looking for a basic DTP programme.
What has this got to do with Desktop Publishing Suite 2009? Well, when I opened the package the first thing out of the box was the manual for Page Plus 11, followed by a leaflet saying that once I registered I would receive the Resources Guide that came with the stand-alone Page Plus 11 I bought a while back. For the record PP11 dates back to 2005...
Desktop Publishing Suite 2009 also includes Draw Plus 8, a perfectly adequate drawing/graphics program first released in 2006. And as if that weren't enough, from 2007 we have Impact Plus 5, for all those distracting web animations that annoy everyone but the maker.
I'm aware I'm being harsh about this, but Serif are being way too cheeky with this release. The only way that 2009 comes into this suite is that if you pay by credit card, that's when you'll get the bill. The software is good - Page Plus 11 alone would be a good buy at £25 (if the resources disk was included) - but I'm marking this down by two stars for the misleading "2009" which implies the latest versions.
Buy it: it's good value. But don't be taken in by the "2009" nonsense: only Impact Plus is the most recent version while Page Plus is now up to version X3 and Draw Plus is up to version X2.
Intuitive and comprehensive - perfect for all my projects
I use Serif (PagePlus 11) desktop publishing at home and don't profess to be a computer expert.
I really like this product, having recently upgraded from Pageplus 5. I use it for my hobby of cardmaking and also for ad hoc projects, such as drawing up a menu or making a poster.
I find Serif really easy to use and I particularly like the ease with which items on a page can be aligned and squared. I am sure Serif probably has many more features than the ones I use but as a card maker I have found the following really simple to use and invaluable:
*Importing pictures and clipart.
*Creating a box exactly the size I want.
*Designing and printing a page with no margins.
*Tons and tons of really nice fonts.
*Alignment and centralisation of text/images.
*Rotating and reversing images.
*Conversion to pdf
*Coversion to jpeg etc
I particularly like that Pageplus is not over complicated and pretty intuitive to use. I don't suppose it is as advanced as an application like Photoshop, but it has always been able to do everything I have wanted and I haven't needed any training to use it!
I have added images of basic projects I have completed! You can find them in my profile.
Easy to use.
Easy to install and use, and has been useful to a degree. However, like other reviewers found it a little limiting and have seen some of this software before in other guises. So ok if you are new to DTP but look elsewhere if you really are serious.
