Wildhearts unparalleled live playing ability showcased here5
(FOUR & HALF STARS)

The Wildhearts are a truly sensational rock band and this DVD admirably showcases their live playing talents, cementing them as one of the true great live bands of all time. This is a great DVD for the fans, especially those who loved the Wildhearts riff-heavy monster self-titled album.

All songs from the non-Japanese release are showcased here with too many standouts to mention. The playing is rock solid and the vocal harmonies that are the band's trademark are showcased perfectly with Ginger, CJ and Scott sounding fantastic. Ritch plays like a man possessed and the band really shine, executing razor sharp time changes and all of the other tricks in the Wildhearts arsenal with ease.

Highlight tracks are too difficult to single out, with all being great. I could sum it up by saying that whatever songs are your favourites on the album are played brilliantly here.

The DVD is presented with songs being interspersed with random footage from the studio and the road. Some might prefer just the music without the distraction, but I think the other footage is used to break it up a bit, with the majority of footage being the band members playing in fixed positions in the studio. There is also a little bit of live footage from concerts.

The only thing that kept this from being a 5-star review is that the audio mix is a bit low for mine, and limited to a 2-channel mix. A big 5.1 mix would have been great, but I suspect it was not done due to budgetary constraints. We should just enjoy the gift that the guys have given us.

A few extras such as the New Flesh and Destroy All Monsters videos are also included.

Put it in and crank it up!

TV Tan3
This DVD, similar in concept to the free DVD given away with Metallica's St. Anger album, is basically the entire album "The Wildhearts" recorded "Live in the studio" (natch), albeit with the songs in a different running order. There's a few seconds of messing about between each song - nothing insightful, interesting just vaguely amusing waffle. I'd of like to have had a bit of info on the song about to be played - inspirations for the song, etc but there's nothing...

The EXTRAS on DVD are The New Flesh and Destroy All Monsters videos coupled with a Making of... for the latter. The New Flesh video is a very cheery affair in contrast to the Destroy All Monsters video which is, frankly, disturbing and hard to watch!

Not a bad DVD, but could of been better. I paid £8 for this which was about right, a steal at a lower price, but not worth any more.

BTW, who the hell is Tim Smith?
