Editorial Reviews

CD Description
January, 1971: America was facing a decade of reconstruction. The optimism of the sixties had been shattered by race riots, assassinations, escalation of the Vietnam War and political instability. And Marvin Gaye, the brooding Prince of Motown, asked, “What’s Going On?”

Marvin’s landmark single, released in January, fronts the latest in this continuing, critically acclaimed series, The Complete Motown Singles Vol. 11. The 5-CD set, which covers just the first six months of the year, is chock full of those wider-world stories and the great music during a period when the company, too, was undergoing its own reconstruction. All of the wonderful, entertaining, emotional and sometimes quirky music (from the likes of the Jackson 5, Gladys Knight and the Pips and many more) is given a beautiful frame: the “album” style packaging with a rich 148-page booklet featuring unique stories about every song, a track-by-track history, detailed recording and release dates and a historical overview. Another great era, another great set. The Complete Motown Singles Vol. 11 is an extraordinary document of the time.

Customer Reviews

The latest in a great collection...5
This is the latest offering in this series of simply fabulous CDs. It features all the single releases, both A & B sides, promo releases and the odd alternate version, released in the first half of 1971. This release is, in fact, entitled The Complete Motown Singles, Volume 11A: 1971. Volume 11B is apparently not far off which covers the second half of 1971.
Included is a playable 7 inch 45 of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" backed by "God is Love" and a 139 page book which details every track; it's release date, label, charts positions and artist information.
This is a must (as are the rest in this series) for every Motown buff.
Interesting to note is this is the first time in this series we hear stereo 'promo releases'. Everything till now has been mono.
The series ends with Volume 12, which marks the end of Motown's Detroit era.
Jim.

another motown gem4
Just received this from Amazon and it is another exciting release full of stereo promos and rare releases. I can not wait for vol 11b 0r 12 the final chapter of the Detroit era. After 1971 the changes made Motown a label which tried to keep up with the modern trends and lost its individuality as Motown Fans turned to Northern Soul. I actually rate this as 5 stars but I cannot change it now.

A Motowns fan dream5
Whilt I enjoy the earlier sixty's music there is plenty here to enjoy cant wait to complete the collection.
