Great game, but with some annoying bits...
Im going to start out by saying that this is a very good game.
The graphics are really great, the fact that you can get off your board is useful (so it doent take an hour to get up some stairs), the story line is cool and there is lots of the city to explore.
Now for the annoying stuff:
The thing that I hate the most is the in-game map. On the old game, the map was clear, you could scroll through the different areas of the city. The mini-map on the old game was good too.
In this game, the map is dull and the roads are faint lines on a black backround and you can only look at the whole map (you cant zoom in). It doesnt say the place names and you can only look at one catagory of challenges at a time.
The mini-map doesnt show any roads or buildings, it is just a black circle with orange logos that represent challenges.
I think that this game is aimed at people who have completed the first game, as it throws you in, and expects you to know the basics already.
CONCLUSION:
If you are a new-comer to the ea skate games, and haven't played the first game, i would recomend getting the Skate 1 first.
If you put up with the little annoying things, this game is fantastic.
In some respects more Skate 1.5 then Skate 2
I bought this game hoping for more of the same from Skate 1, and in that respect I wasn't disappointed. The same great control system is still there, and EA have introduced some new tricks, as well as walking. On the face of it this is great. However, some of the new tricks are too difficult to perform reliably. Furthermore, the walking has been animated TERRIBLY and feels glitchy. OK so it's a skating game, and the walking feature is only there so you can move stuff about and to allow you to walk out of tight spots rather than skate out of them. But nevertheless, more thought could have been put into it.
The other disappointment was that the world is too similar to the previous game, and that the mini map isn't as good as the old game.
Overall, the new tricks and walking features mean the game does feel fresh, however, it does feel like a reworked Skate 1, rather than a full blown sequel
still to reach its full potential
skate 2 is certainly an improvement on the first. More tricks, a bigger more versatile map and better character creation are all certainly steps forward and pushes tony hawk even more to the edge of the big black hole his gaming series is facing.
Ofcourse there are the cons, for me the skater seems a little more reluctant to grind, almost as if you sometimes have to really force him to hit a rail as there seems to be some invisible force pushing you away. Landing backflips also seems trickier, it is now so easy to flip too much and miss the ground with the wheels, eventually landing on your head. Whether this is more realistic in real skating i wouldn't know, but i do know i much prefer landing tricks to bailing.
However, the main issue, although small, is offboard functions. Pressing Y will make your skater get off his board, however standing too close to something whilst doing so will just make him fall over. Off board, the skater seems drunk, very slow and sluggish and prone to falling over for no real reason a lot of the time. Although being off board is designed to make things easier and give a new deal of control to the game, it is really more of a hinderance and you may find you'll stop doing all together eventually.
The impression i get with skate 2 is that by expanding the game, it has brought a significant amount of issues with it. This game is certainly more irritating than the first because of the skaters inability to stay on his board.
One gripe i have that gets little mention is the downhill style of the map, yes going downhill is fun, but its a long journey back to the top and hitching on cars is still not a great alternative to skating upwards. I do get sick of constantly ending up in flat, boring downtown, knowing there is no exciting way back to the top
Having said that, this game is enjoyable and the new range of tricks is really the only thing the first game was missing and is the sole reason i would choose the sequel. Irritating a lot, but fun 100% of the time.
It is clear that the creators have thought more about the world around your skater, with more dedicated and angry guards which are faster and much more aggressive. The civvies drop things and leap out of your way as you go past and are not always happy about it.
Other skaters are also more relevant, they will also be chased by guards, one time a guard slipped on my skateboard whilst chasing another skater.
It feels a lot more like you are in a living breathing world, adding much more depth to the characters, just don't expect a metal gear solid storyline.
A very neat touch, i thought.
