A spellbinding song from two of the finest bands in British pop music5
Barcode: 0602517948853

Ever since it was announced that Girls Aloud would be working with the Pet Shop Boys, i was excited. Two of my favourite bands coming together to produce a piece of top-class pop music, i couldn't wait to hear it.

And The Loving Kind delivers on every level - a irresistably catchy and danceable tune, it's true power comes from the heartrendingly beautiful lyrics, laced with that touch of the melancholy Girls Aloud do so well. Re-edited for this single release, the new version contains a tweaked intro which personally i much prefer to the album version, everything about this song is lush (and if you listen carefully in the chorus, you can hear backing vocals from Neil Tennant). All in all another perfect slice of pop perfection from Girls Aloud.

For the b-side we get the 7 and a half minute long Girls On 45 Megamix - featuring a host of the Girls' previous hits, it is a fitting reminder to how many brilliant songs they have given us over the past few years. Although i would have prefered the absolutely amazing 'Memory Of You' (the b-side on the 7" version of the single) on this CD, the megamix is a nice bonus.

This has to be one of the best singles girls aloud have ever done it sounds a lot like 2007's Call The Shots.

...dreary synth pop...2
I'm slightly confused here. Folks who'd written Girls Aloud off are falling all over themselves to hail this as the greatest thing since sliced bread. And I just don't get it. Now I like Girls Aloud and really rate their new album "Out Of Control". But the two dullest songs on the album are this, and previous single 'The Promise'.

If 'The Promise' saw them playing follow the leader with a soulless piece of sixties faux soul, this single sees them latching belatedly onto the eighties synth revival, in the company of the Pet Shop Boys, two decades since the PSB actually mattered. Now I'll be delighted if they keep going, so want them to keep having hits, but this is setting an unfortunate precedent.

Granted, our Nicola actually gets some room to shine here, but the dated synths and dreary drum machine leaves me cold. I suspect this is the next step in trying to turn Girls Aloud into a grown up band. Which gets a big boo, hiss round my way.

Thankfully, the B-side revives a much better eighties icon in the shape of Stars On 45, as the mixers get to work stringing 10 Girls hits into the much beloved Stars On 45 format. Now, if they can get Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers to work on their next record, I'll be very happy indeed.
