Amazon.co.uk Review
Six series in, and the television adventures of the Gallagher family in Shameless are still as entertaining as always. There’s no danger of the show being diluted or selling out, either, as it continues to be one of the most downright entertaining programmes currently on British television.
For those new to the show, it’s set in Manchester and is centered around Frank Gallagher, his offspring, his wife and his ex. Living on the Chatsworth Housing Estate, their adventures also involve an abundance of supporting characters. However, what really helps keep Shameless fresh is that it exists in a fluid world, when people move in and out with regularity. The show simply isn’t allowed to get stale.
It’s still the Gallaghers that are the beating heart of Shameless, though, and this series has plenty to keep them busy. With a mixture of sex, violence, drugs and loud screaming arguments, it’s as far from family entertainment as you’re likely to get, but it is compulsive viewing, and often gut-bustingly funny.
The DVD set includes all 16 episodes from the show’s sixth season, and we’re already promised a further 16 from 2010’s series seven. Given the form that Shameless finds itself in here, that’s something to genuinely look forward to, and here’s hoping that the quality maintained in series six continues. For as it stands, this is a terrific series of a terrific show. --Jon Foster

Priceless!
It's so easy for a long-running series to 'lose it': favourite characters disappear; ideas run out; cliches set in. Has Shameless turned sour? Not in the least! It is still the most watchable series on telly, still (despite some of its subject matter) fresh as a daisy.
Ian decides he wants to leave the Chatsworth Estate and you assume he's gone for good, like Fiona, Steve, Kevin, Veronica, Marty, Lip etc...but no! He is back in later episodes. It's astonishing to think how many new characters have entered the Shameless universe, replacing some of the old ones, and how effectively they've blended in. There are a couple of new ones here but, for me, Carl is the star: he is truly the Huckleberry Finn (or possibly Tucker Jenkins) of our times.
Meanwhile, the Maguires almost take over from the Gallaghers as the dominant family in the series, but again we don't mind. Special praise must go to Ciaran Griffiths's Mickey Maguire who has grown from a bit-part to a masterful comic creation from his walk to his snarl, yet also vulnerable and not unlovable. He must be easy to write for and gets some of the best plot lines.
To those who criticise Shameless for its amoral stance on contemporary life, consider this: did Minder's Terry McCann or perhaps James Bond (and there's a great Bond-themed episode) ever get a dose of the clap, as Carl does here? As for Paddy Maguire, the effects of him pushing heroin on the estate come back to haunt him in a dark, stark and totally compelling storyline spread over several episodes. Unlike The Simpsons which, with rare exceptions, winds back the clock at the beginning of each new episode, here all the characters' lives develop as a result of what has happened - and they certainly have to live with the consequences of their actions.
With Shameless, you never know what's coming next. Its ultimate success must be that, for all its faults, isn't the Chatsworth Estate somewhere we'd all give our back teeth to live on ourselves?
A WORK OF ART
I purchased the series based on the reviews of others , to which I now have no regrets. Superb acting from all the characters and great storytelling. My partner and I have had very little sleep whilst watching series 1-5 , cause all we wanted to know is, what happens next............
Currently the series is doing it's rounds amongst all my workmates in South Africa and at lunch we have a Chatsworth Estate moment.
Just bring them on FRANK GALLAGHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
quality starting to drop
as a shameless fanatic i literally couldnt wait for series 6 of the fantastic programme to begin, 16 episodes, and from jan-may i thought, hoped and expected this to be great..sadly though i have to say that i didnt really enjoy series 6 at all. from monica doing a runner again, and ot returning, norma seeming to not really have any role or need to be there, jamie and karen having "problems" and mandys sleazy new boyfriend...then the somewhat strange introduction of ians "deaf" friend and then the low point for me, the problems between the normally rock solid if not mad paddy and mimi maguire, culmanating in the death of mandy at the end..on the bright side, carl has become a star, debbie is now beginning to mature into a fine looking young woman (if still being thrust back to mother hen though after the departure of monica!!!) and frank is getting as good (or as bad as his behaviour is!!!) and young liam will probably play more of a role from now on.this series seemed "too problematic" for me and the jokey well thoughtout storylines seemed to disappear and be replaced by more serious drama type storylines with the cracking cutting edge of funny everyday reality having gone...my other problem is that with series 7 being cut to just 8 episodes i fear this truly great show could be entering its final days!!! :-(
