Manufacturer's Description

The SR37 is a light and compact camcorder fitted with a high–powered Carl Zeiss lens. Compose your scenes easily, choose your settings and enjoy vibrant playback on a superb 2.7" LCD screen with touchscreen controls.

Great film starts with great lenses
The SR37 is fitted with a Vario–Tessar lens made by Carl Zeiss, the world renowned optical specialists. These premium lenses are highly rated by photographers for their colour precision, superb contrast and extremely low distortion levels at all focal lengths. Add to this an incredible optical zoom that extends to 60x magnification and you have the capability to shoot with amazing detail even when the subject is at a distance. If you need to go even closer you also have a digital zoom of up to 2000x, though optical zoom is generally considered superior because it physically moves the lens rather than moving in on the image. The SR37 makes it easy for you to see what you’re doing when you set up your shots too. The large, tilting LCD display uses reflective technology to give excellent visibility even in direct sunlight.

Start fast so you don’t miss the moment
Great action can come and go very quickly so you don’t want to waste valuable time starting up your camera. Start the SR37 in a matter of seconds: just flip open the LCD screen, touch the start key and you’re ready to shoot. Later, the Face Index function automatically detects scenes with faces, and the handy Film Roll Index feature summarises long scenes, to make it easier to browse through hours of footage.

Smart automatic functions
Now you can make sure that even the trickiest scenes look great, thanks to auto functions which take the guesswork out of matching settings to subject. Take sun–drenched backlit scenes, for example. The D–range Optimiser adjusts exposure and contrast to counter the effects of high–contrast conditions, so you can clearly see faces in the foreground. And when faces are your focus, Face Detection adjusts the camera’s settings to deliver clear, natural skin tones.

SteadyShot Active Mode to reduce picture blur
If you are shooting with the camera in your hand, there is always a danger of camera shake spoiling your picture, even if your subject is stationary. SteadyShot is a handy digital image stabiliser that is active every time you shoot. This is especially important when using the powerful zoom to close in on details. The SR37 lets you hear in close up too. The SR37 lets you record sound in close–up too. Its super smart mic zooms in with your optical zoom to cut out background and foreground noise and concentrate on sounds that matter, such as conversation.

One touch disc burn and easy PC back up
One of the great pleasures of shooting film is sharing it with family and friends. It couldn’t be easier with the SR37. Transfer your films to your PC using a super–fast USB 2.0 connection and use your DVD burner to make DVD copies. If you want to share your movies on the move, or free up memory space, you can do it quickly by using the optional portable DVD burner. This attaches directly to the SR37 with a single cable.

PMB (Picture Motion Browser software)
Managing your movie collection is hugely simplified by this software which is included with the SR37. Just install it on your PC and it provides a perfect archive for your films which are all just a click or two away. You can arrange them by date, by person, and search through them quickly. From the archive you can burn them to discs, send them to friends or upload them to sites in a matter of seconds. If you connect your SR37 or computer directly to any TV you can view your work on the big screen too.

Compact Quality Camcorder - Excellent Price on Amazon4
With two toddlers I just wanted a compact camcorder that is easy to use, well made with a quality picture. This is my first camcorder and I am delighted with it. I have used it on a number of day trips now and have found it to be ideal for quickly capturing those amusing incidents. As a real bonus, when in fully automatic "easy" mode to get filming you simply have to open up the viewing screen, open the lens (it will remind you) and press record - no longer than about 5 seconds. Excellent! It also has a powerful 60 X Zoom which is easily controlled with your forefinger and the 60 GB Hard Drive means you do not have to worry about memory cards.

The only reason that I have not given it 5 stars is that SONY only provide it with a 90 min battery which could be limiting if you are away from a power source. I bought in addition the SONY NP-FH50 battery (145 min) (from Amazon NOT SONY!!) and carry both in the Lowepro Clips 100 Camcorder Case which I also bought online for less than £10 inc P&P. The Camcorder Case can easily fit all leads for downloading and TV viewing as well as the adaptor for recharging and enables the camcorder to fit snugly at the top.

In summary - I am delighted with this lightweight quality piece of kit which is easy to use. Recommended!!

Nice camcorder shame about the software and support3
I cant add much regarding the quality of the camcorder. Its good value for money, easy to use and does what it says on the packet. However, I have a good bit to say about Sony. They appear to have designed the product to strongly encorage users to use the sony software to manage video and burn CD or DVD vesions of it. I assume this works but its very limiting and limited. If you want to edit the video even in a rudamentary way you will need to convert it to another format which is inconvienient and should not be necessary. The same is true if you want to post on youtube or facebook. If you want to get help to do this the Sony 'self service' site is very, very, poor. Great electronics, good price, terrible attitude to software and product support and attitude.

    Great little camcorder4
After a lot of on-line research I settled on this one to take on trekking holidays abroad, and this one came out tops. It's the first one I've ever used and so easy I haven't needed to read the instructions yet, although I probably ought to to make best use of it. The picture quality is great, even in poor light indoors. The zoom is also good, and the focal range up close is amazing. It's very neat, compact and lightweight, almost small enough to stuff into your jacket pocket, but still has the benefit of hard drive memory.

Criticisms? Like nearly all digicams, the monitor is poor in bright daylight so framing shots can sometimes be a bit hit and miss. (I mourn the loss of viewfinders for the sake of weight reduction.) The case is far too big for stuffing in backpacks, but after much searching I still haven't found a smaller one that fits.

The battery is recharged by plugging the whole camcorder into the mains, which will be a problem in remote areas when giving the lodge owner the batteries to recharge behind the counter (I'd trust them with a charger, but not the whole camera!) I'm looking into a stand alone charger, but this will be another additional cost. I will also be looking into a bigger battery, but these add to the bulk and weight.

Finally, DO NOT BUY THE MEMORY CARD RECOMMENDED ON THIS SITE in the "people who bought this also bought...." to go with this camera. IT DOESN'T FIT, which we only found out after unwrapping it and trying to put it in. It is therefore a complete waste of £10.99! The correct memory card (a pro duo memory stick I think) is about £45.00, but if you're on a long trip, worth the extra peace of mind.
