The first PES title on Wii was revolutionary in many ways. The new point and click control interface, only made possible by the unique nature of the Wii controllers offered a completely new way for players to interact with PES. One year on and the programmers have listened to feedback from gamers and made PES 2009 on Wii an even more impressive title.
The new game will retain the intuitive point and click interface used to control both the player in possession of the ball and to send those around him on to runs into space. However, a new traditional control system using either a Wii Remote or Classic controller has also been implemented.
Using a Wii Remote held sideways or a classic controller, the secondary player can control the game in a manner familiar to existing versions of PES for other formats. Thus, they can control using familiar PES controls while their co-op player orchestrates their player and the rest of the team using the bespoke Wii system.
An improved defense system will allow players to close down their opposition with more precision using the Z button, while a new targeting system sees the player steering where they place the ball when shooting. Coupled with better AI for the CPU-controlled players and opposition, the result is a more free-flowing and faster paced simulation. Set pieces have also been reworked, with more precision on free kicks and a wider range of corners than in the previous game.
In keeping with versions for other formats, PES 2009 for Wii will also feature the UEFA Champions League, the addition of the ever-popular Master League for the first time on this format plus the return of an enhanced Champions Road competition, an enhanced Edit Mode, more online gameplay possibilities, and a Mii Training sub-game system

Very polished game
I have never played PES before and football is about fourth down the list of sports I'll watch. I am always on the lookout for sport games on the Wii, so for me it came to a trade-iff between FIFA and PES. From previews I heard that the controls were better than that of PES2008, and possily better than the FIFA '08 version so I hung back until it was released before getting a copy.
I am glad I did. It takes some some time to get into it, but the instructions manual is one of the best I've seen and the online tutorials are a great help too. The controls are a pretty natural fit and it takes little time to learn the basics. It will be some time to get into all the advanced techniques I think.
The online commentary, unlike some other Wii sport games, are quite good.
I guess some people might be bothered by some great football club names not being there (due to licensing I thnk), but it is easy to rename teams. I don't think it is a distraction.
Overall, I think it is a good buy and worth the wait.
Much improved on 2008 version, definitely worth the money
After initially hating and then becoming addicted to PES 2008 on the Wii, I was very much looking forward to the 2009 version. It has certainly been money worth spent and has been improved in every area:
Off the pitch:
- Vastly improved and indepth edit mode, now everything within the game can be edited
- Although the January transfers have not been included, a simple update via the Wii WiFi connection sorts this out in seconds
- An official UEFA Champions League mode is included, which although is not a major addition, makes for a pleasant change for PES to have an official license on board. Its also nice to hear that classic Champs League theme tune and watch the introductory video!
- The much adored Master League comes to the Wii and also a much improved Champions Road mode gives the game more variety
- The online mode has also been given a complete makeover, the 2008 version really was bare bones and a bit of a let down!
- Liverpool & Man Utd are the officially licensed teams, with kit sponsors, stadium etc. Pretty cool to hear the crowd singing a few specific songs for these teams
On the pitch:
- Graphics much much better! Gone is that dodgy fizzy/blurry bottom third bit of the pitch/screen. The crowd is still cardboard like and the graphics obviously no where near that of the PS3/Xbox but can't complain.
- You can use different control methods now, but I still think the original configuration is far superior once you get used to the controls
- Shooting is more accurate by the optional method of pointing and using the B button to aim. I'm still getting used to it - passing to other players instead of shooting can get annoying!
- Defending is still a bit average, using the Z button still seems to be the main method but it is hit and miss (literally!)
- Same commentary as '08
- Basic & advanced training tutorials still useful in perfecting that crucial 1-2 pass!
Although reading back on this review it does look like I'm a Konami salesman(!), this is by far my most played game on my Wii and I can't recommend it enough.
Best yet, how can they top it next year??????
I am not the biggest computer games player, in fact the only game i ever completed is God Father on PC so i am surprised that i can say i am a proud owner of a Wii, which i have had now for nearly 2 years and have spent many a night ignoring the missus and playing PES 08 and other games which remain unfinished.
Naturally i finished PES 08 and exchanged it for FIFA 09, but could never fully understand the game, enjoyed the manager mode but that was it and the controls made my arms hurt (yes I spent 6 hours a time on it) and A & B button should be other way round, so again swapped on Friday 27th when PES 09 came out. Took the missus for a meal that night so she won't complain about the time I was about to spend with the mistress (PES 09) that night. Finally started playing the game, took me 2 hours to adjust the team names to the premier league teams as they do not come already named. Arsenal is called North London FC or something like that, it had to GO!!!! Plus had to do several transfers that had occurred in the premier league, Robbie Kane is still at Liverpool in the game etc. I would suggest if you are picky as me in team names, have some sort of reference to refer to like internet or like me you can spend 20 minutes trying to decide if a team is Blackburn or Middlesbrough as I had to do it from memory.
Finally got down to business on the Master league which I really think they should have been incorporated into the Champions road part of the game, but I suppose you get more games for your money, the teams in both master league and champions road are the same as you start with anyway.
The biggest change is the defence control which has massively improved, the defence for 08 was too frustrating. The general graphics is better but that is because the players are small so it can all fit a bit tighter (now I need my glasses to play it) and you cannot zoom into the pitch which is the only edge FIFA 09 had on this game, and something Komani should improve on next year. The controls are still the same and I took it up again in no time. I started off playing in normal level using Manchester united to beat Liverpool 4-0 in a 5 Mins game which had a pace so fast it should come with a health warning. I spent 6 hours playing, finally going to bed at 6.30 Am, the missus woke up and found me still there and manage to drag me away!!
Overall I PES 09 is better than 08 as there is more games for your money with the introduction of master league and the whole build a club/facilities thing in champions road and off course a better defence. Oh I messed up 6 hours work in master league by running out of point (got transfer happy and signed too many new players) so had to restart after the 4 hours it took me to play it but on the upside my arm doesn't hurt anymore when I play so I don't mind as the A and B button s on the wiimote are now being used as God intended.
Now I just have to work my way back up to world class/top player or whatever it's called and start trashing Man United 10-0 with Arsenal in a 5 Mins game.
Oh BTW if you wondering, I don't have any Children hence I have plenty of spare time!
