Synopsis
Dean and Sam Winchester are two brothers with a special talent. Well-versed in the supernatural after their father became convinced that their mother was captured by unholy spirits, Dean and Sam dedicated their young lives to hunting down these otherworldly terrors. But adulthood saw Sam drift away from these preternatural activities, instead choosing to settle down in a life of domestic bliss with his girlfriend. But when the Winchesters' dad goes missing, both Dean and Sam know what they have to do, leading to some epic cross-country trips as the brothers try to find their father. This release contains a selection of episodes from the fourth series.

Disappointing3
No, I don't mean the forth season of Supernatural, which I love, because its full of great episodes (and a lot of them are in this box), but I am very disappointed because the box comes without any specials except some deleted scenes.

The long awaited gag reel and commentaries are not to be found here. If you don't have the first part already, I'd go for the season box set. I just hope that the specials are not an exclusive part of the US release.

Great series - it's only half the season though4
This set has the last half of the episodes from Supernatural season 4, just as previous season UK releases were first marketed split into part 1 and part2 [there's 22 episodes in season 4]. Obviously this is an attempt to extract as much money as possible from those who missed the UK TV showing and are desperate to see how Dean and Sam are getting on. Apparently this whole season is great, and the best yet, so perhaps it's money well spent. We are renting the DVDs though, and buying the full PAL Season 4 set which will be released soon [in November 2009]. Certainly the episodes from Season 4 Part One were scorchers, although the body count seems to be piling up [yes, Supernatural deserves that 15 rating]. Be careful of which reviews you read though, as some contain a few somewhat massive 'spoilers'. Fortunately the last episode of 'Season 4 Part One's DVD set didn't have a particular cliffhanger other than the question of Lilith not unexpectedly remaining unresolved [and she's no Angel, although she is almost as annoying as one].

The previous part-1 DVD set has a "In the Beginning" series creator commentary, and the out-takes [cut scenes, although these often give away key elements of the plot - so watch them last] - I expect similar extras will be included on this set. Subtitles in this Season 4 Part 2 set will no doubt be English, English for the hard of hearing and Dutch [Nederlands], with spoken English audio only, as with Part 1. For the complete fourth season try the NTSC complete season 4 sets from Amazon international resellers [NTSC sets are reputed to contain a few more extras as well] - although our Season 4 set is out very soon [November 2009]. I suppose we can rejoice the series hasn't been cancelled like so many other excellent shows [Angel, Twin Peaks, The Dresden Files, Tru Calling, Enterprise, Blood Ties....]. Supernatural: still very spooky and still highly recommended. Whilst you're waiting for this DVD set to arrive, do check out 'The Dresden Files', 'Angel', 'Blood Ties' and 'Tru Calling' DVD season sets that my daughter [15] and I rate as at least the equal of 'Supernatural' [i.e. they are superb].

Demons and Angels5
Thanks to a really strong main cast and some excellent writing and production, four seasons in and Supernatural is still going strong, with every episode worth watching and a seemingly never ending well of good ideas. Like all shows that get renewed enough times, the story arc in Season 4 has had by necessity to be larger and riskier than ever before, but thanks to some darker and emotional storylines, summoned forth by excellent - occasionally heartrending - performances by lead actors Jared Padalecki (Sam) and Jensen Ackles (Dean) it not only gets away with it, but carries it all off with some serious style.

The introduction of angels into the mix is realised far better than some other shows - here angels are quite menacing and self-righteous and their otherworldliness brings in an element of detachment from humanity that you hadn't seen in quite the same way from the demons on the show. Even so, what really sells the angel concept is not the writing or the effects: The casting of Misha Collins as Castiel was a stroke of genius - in more ways than one, for it has literally picked ratings up enough for the show to be renewed for a fifth season. I know that Supernatural has always been about the two lead characters, but it seems the Americans liked Castiel so much that the series - widely admitted following a season three ratings dip to have been due to end this season - has been renewed for a fifth season, bringing Misha in as the third lead actor. That doesn't mean we'll have Cas-specific episodes edging Sam and Dean out, we're assured, so here's looking forward to the final season! If it's as good as this one, it'll be a hell of a ride.
