SMASHING!
A good game, and easily the best Tennis game. Just got this today and very impressed with the graphics, improved gameplay from the last version and most importantly the world tour mode. The Career mode is long, quite challenging and arcade style fun and development. There are strong new mini games, a good training school with Tim Henman and now 23 real top players (8 new ones). The new 'over the shoulder' cam is very good and online play looks very well supported and adds to the VT world.
However, there are quite a few bugs! Trophies aren't always awarded and there are online glitches and teleporting ball shots.
If you like tennis then this is the game for you, but it will frustrat. 1 player mode can be fun, but never as much as multiplayer. Arcadey and easy to pick up with online play to maximise the fun of this beautiful game.
First tennis game for me but very, very impressive with only a few minor faults.
Virtua Tennis 2009 Review
NB. Only got the game recently so yet to really get into the World Tour Career mode.
Good: Impressive graphics, esp. when compared to previous tennis games I have briefly seen in trailers, shops and other people's homes. Players that are included such as Federer, Nadal and Ivanovic are well-chosen, and you certainly aren't left wanting for more (alhough I wouldn't say no...) World Tour mode seems impressive from the little taste I have had of it so far, with very realistic settings and detailed also. Serving control is very good in an area where I would imagine is very hard to get right.
Bad: Not much, considering how apathetic I was when I eventually took the plunge and bought the game. By far the most annoying thing is the drop shots, which it seems to be almost impossible to do anyway realistically close to the net. If they landed where they do in the game in real life, you'd be eaten alive by your opponent, yet it treats the shots as if they are really difficult. Although I cannot vouch for this, I have heard the unlicensed, created players, are also much less detailed than the real life ones.
To sum up, this game has really impressed me so far. I don't write many reviews, but this really deserves its four star rating and wouldn't have to do much in order to earn five in my opinion. Only a few some faults as mentioned above hold it back. Personally, one of my favourite things about this game is it's 'pickup-ability' - the way that even if you're a complete amatuer like I was (mostly) to tennis games, you can pick it up as long as you've read the manual, and enjoy a decent game of realistic tennis.
Overall, again, I would recommend this product to anyone that is either an expert pro or a complete novice of any age that is interested in tennis for this product.
Rewards persistence and takes time to get into.
I like the look of the game and the almost RPG aspect of the world tour mode - where you can buy gear and ramp up your skills.
At first, this seems dull and repetitive - but as you get up the rankings you meet new partners for doubles and your opponents get better.
Plus - with coaching and playing a lot of games, it is possible to play better shots. At first I was just clicking the X button and getting the ball back every time - easy but dull. After a few hours, I was actually aiming where I wanted to place my shots, passing opponents and directing smashes.
So...not for those who want instant gratification and aren't prepared to do a bit of work - but with patience the world tour mode provides many hours of rewarding play.
Much like Tennis itself - put in the work or be played off the court.
Also like Tennis it can be repetitive - but the reward of new opponents keeps you coming back and while it's not my favourite PS3 game - it is a worthy addition.
