The Tragically Hip have been heroes in their native Canada since the 1980s, though they've remained a cult item in the U.S. With more than 20 years in the rearview mirror, the band has retained its spirit, but grown in subtlety. While thisis their second album overseen by Metallica producer Bob Rock, WE ARE THE SAME actually sounds rather mellow in contrast to early efforts like UP TO HERE. Needless to say, Gordon Downie's distinctive vocal quaver is still the dominant element, floating atop a rootsy mix of acoustic and electric guitars and a folk-rock feel that allows the band's thoughtful,melodic compositions to unfold in a way that feels natural and graceful.

The T HIP , have made YET another masterpiece!!!

Regardless of what you may think of the Canadian born superstar producer...BOB ROCK...he seems to have motivated...THE HIP...to even greater musical heights!

I think that too much blame is placed on...ROCK. He doesn't write any of an artists song's and he doesn't hold a gun to any band's head.

The band / artist always has the final say about what they release.

ROCK's...track record for helping bands sell millions of CDs is no small feat. What ever you may think of him , he has the golden touch.

After...THE HIP...released 3 so-so albums in a row they came out with one of their best albums ever called WORLD CONTAINER , under the guidance of...ROCK.

THE HIP , was a band re-born what ever the reasons may be?

So how do you top their greatest album since...PHANTOM POWER?

You record your best album since...UP TO HERE / ROAD APPLES & FULLY COMPLETELY!!!

Lead singer , GORD DOWNIE , stated in a recent interview that ,

" the album WORLD CONTAINER , was setting the dinner table and the album WE ARE THE SAME , is the meal ".

THE HIP and ROCK didn't want to make a , WORLD CONTAINER # 2.

They wanted to add a few instruments into the mix after mostly 11 guitar / drum ONLY based studio albums. They had done this just a little before with their amazing , PHANTOM POWER album.

As the album's title suggests [WE ARE THE SAME] this is still very much a rocking HIP , record.

They have just added some strings , some horns , some mandolins , ect...into the mix in just some of the songs.

This is a nice change for this band and it all works very , very , well.

GORD's lyrics , are more personal and are easier to understand.

The first 6 songs are mid-tempo / mellower rockers influenced by very good , NEIL YOUNG and BECK.

The beautiful opening song called MORNING MOON , has a country / rock flavour to it.

The song COFFEE GIRL , uses a trumpet in it.

THE LAST RECLUSE , is also just beautiful.

The climax to the first 6 songs of WE ARE THE SAME is a song called , THE DEPRESSION SUITE.

This song is the longest song that THE HIP , have ever written at 9+ minutes long. It is a funny title for a song with some very up lifting music in it.

It is in 3 parts and is one of their best songs ever!!!

Songs 7 to 12 , are the rocking HIP that we know and love.

The song LOVE IS A FIRST , even has a small GORD rant , in it.

FROZEN IN MY TRACKS , rocks the house out like , THE DROP OFF , did on the WORLD CONTAINER album.

The excellent WORLD CONTAINER album , blew out of your speakers right from it's start and it rarely lets up.

WE ARE THE SAME , is like a very small , slow burning camp fire that turns into a 3 album blaze at it's end.

It may take a few full listens to get into this album , but when you do , you will not be able to stop playing it over and over again!!!

Again for the second time in a row THE HIP , are back big time!!!

THE HIP , are playing a small EUROPEAN tour this NOVEMBER , 2009 , so check out their web site for the countries , concerts times and tickets.

They play 7 to 8 songs from the WE ARE THE SAME album and their is NO warm up band.

Just 2 long sets of , THE HIP!!!

If you like traditional rock this album is a good un. hHve followed Trad Hip since buying Road Apples after reading review in "Q". A brilliant band.
