Editorial Reviews
CD Description
* Sugar Pie DeSanto is one of the best-known female soul singers of the 1960s, particularly in the UK, where she was a frequent visitor. She appeared at the Folk Blues Festivals in Europe in the mid-60s and is still going strong, performing around the world.
* Several of her tracks are popular on the Northern soul, mod and new breed scenes. She was inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame in 2008. `Go Go Power', one of her rarest 45s, was used in a recent TV ad campaign.
* There was a CD of Sugar Pie's Chess recordings released 10 years ago, but that set comprised just 12 cuts and is now deleted. Our 24-tracker comprises all of her Chess singles, including a UK-only gem, three classic duets with Etta James and a great previously unissued track. Many of the selections have never been released outside the USA before or are reissued here for the first time ever.
Customer Reviews
Absolutely First class 60's R & B / Soul
In truth, I only bought this CD for the Classic "Go Go Power" track, a fast paced R&B tune that I have been after for many years with no success, until now - thanks to Kent records.
For those who dont know many of Sugar Pies songs, then this CD has the lot, from the classics, In The Basement, Soulful Dress, I Dont Wanna Fuss and Go Go Power, to the more bluesy side of the Chess output. What I wasnt expecting when I played the CD was the other tracks that at volume 13 in the car sounded fantastic - Slip In Mules(a reply to Tommy Tuckers Hi heel Sneakers)and Witch For A Night - now we are talking !! The other tracks are all superb "Use What You Got", "Mama Didnt Raise No Fools" etc etc. Overall I am very pleased with this CD
As usual with Kent releases the quality, detail and packaging are outstanding - and the whole CD mixes moody blues ballads with Sugar Pies deep gritty vocals.
I fully recomend this CD if you like your R&B mixed with Soul and a little Blues on the Side.
Sugar Pie Honey Bunch
This is the best Sugar Pie DeSanto compilation ever. The best tracks are: In The Basement Part 1 [with Etta James] Soulful Dress and Go Go Power. I bought it for the extremely rare: In The Basement Part 2. The find is the previously unreleased Witch For A Night which is terrific. Although she was in the shadow of Etta James who was the more powerful singer, her own work is soulful and danceable in its own right. Enjoy!
