Editorial Reviews
CD Description
After a long and successful time with notable Scottish miserablists Arab Strap, Malcolm Middleton has gone some way to creating a name for himself with his solo recordings. 'Waxing Gibbous' is his fifth long player, and his fourth in as many years. Still riding from the brief celebrity status foundupon the release of his Christmas song 'We're All Going To Die' from 2007, Middleton explores slightly lighter territory with this release, featuring contributions from Barry Burns of fellow Scots Mogwai. Includes the single 'Red Travellin' Socks'.

Middleton's Magic Socks
If I were to choose one track from Mr Middleton's splendid
new release the opening and uproariously uplifting
'Red Travellin' Socks' would have to be the one.
It makes me grin from ear to ear every time I hear it
The good news, however, does not stop there.
The twelve compositions which comprise 'Waxing Gibbous'
make for a rich and tasty feast from North of the border.
Mr Middleton is a gifted songwriter. He has the ability
to transform images of everyday life into noble epics.
'Carry Me', with its bleak central monologue, is a
particularly vivid and moving example. The chiming
backing vocals are a delightfully realised idea.
Confessional. Fearlessly honest. Unconventional.
'Zero' is another cracker. Complex driving rhythms
deeply rooted in the soil of a Scottish folk heritage.
'Stop Doing Be Good' has pathos aplenty.
Hope and regret mixed up in equal measure.
The simple and very touching 'Made Up Your Mind'
is quite beautiful in its stark simplicity.
This is a man who knows more than a little about love and loss.
Closing track 'Love On The Run' brings the album
to a richly rewarding conclusion.
Musical support is magnificent throughout.
Mr Simpson's drums, Mr Jones' evocative piano
and vocal adornments by Mr Lynch, Mr Anderson
and Ms Reeve deserve especial mention.
Mr Middleton is to be warmly congratulated for his achievement.
Highly Recommended.
Perfect Summer Music
Saw Mr Middleton live at Mono in Glasgow for the album launch. Got a signed copy there before it was released in the shops, and it is another cracking collection of songs, perfect to listen to whilst sauntering along with you head in the clouds. Red Travellin' Socks is the opener that gets the smile on your face, but is all killer no filler here.
Great songwriting
This guy's songwriting keeps getting better with every release and as the other reviewer said, it's an excellent album for the summer. Their are many great songs on this CD,"carry me" & "dont want to sleep tonight" are my favourates.
