An evening saved by the two main events3
WWE BACKLASH 2009 was filmed at the Dunkin' Donuts Arena in Providence, Rhode Island in April this year.

First up was the bout for the ECW Championship where Christian faced Jack Swagger. For an ECW match, this wasn't all that extreme really. There was a couple of power moves but nothing very memorable at all. 4/10

Next we saw Chris Jericho face Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat after THE WRESTLER star Mickey Rourke backed out of the match. Again, not much write home about - a novelty match that went on too long and had a fairly unexciting finish. 5/10

Possibly the dullest match of the evening was where the Big Red Machine, Kane took on CM Punk. Both of these superstars performed well below their normal standard, resulting in the slowest match of the evening. Definitely worth fast-forwarding! 2/10

A family feud was stepped up in the ring when the Hardy brothers battled it out yet again, this time however in an I Quit match. This was entertaining enough with plenty of high-flying moves and a very different ending. 7/10

Then we had possibly the worst "match" I have ever witnessed in the history of wrestling when comedy character (which isn't actually very funny, and quite frankly is an embarrassment to the business) Santina Marella taking on Beth Phoenix for the title of Miss Wrestlemania. 1/10 is being generous and this just completely humiliates Jim Ross and The Great Khali.

At last we get to some good stuff - The Legacy (Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase Jr and Cody Rhodes) took on the team of Triple H, Batista and Shane McMahon where if any member of The Legacy pinned their opponents or got them counted out or disqualified, Orton would become the WWE Champion. This match was electric from the opening moments and although was a little predictable, had a fantastic finish. This was the highlight of the evening for me. 10/10

Finally we saw Edge take on John Cena in the World Championship bout. The match was full of surprises from the get-go and was non stop excitement all the way through. 9/10

Overall this had a pretty poor start where the crowd participation was fairly flat and lifeless but the evening was saved by two impressive main events. This was a average watch as a whole and probably not one I'd watch again in a hurry so this has earnt itself a 3 star rating at best, if just for the final hour.

A DECENT BACKLASH4
Usually, following on from Wrestlemania, Backlash cannot even exist near the daddys shadow. 2009 was different because a few good feuds continued with a vengeance. Here's the matches.........
CHRISTIAN VS JACK SWAGGER "He had it all in TNA, but here's Christian buried on ECW. Not a very exciting match. Swagger tries to be Kurt Angle, but looks more like Emilios character in The Breakfast Club." 3/10
CHRIS JERICHO VS RICKY THE DRAGON STEAMBOAT "I quite enjoyed the match at Mania. Piper held his own, Superfly was a sheer shadow of his past, but to see Ricky still superfit was a thrill. This is a decent match, not as riveting, but not as bad as many say." 6/10
CM PUNK VS KANE "Standard routine, but has some nice moments. The end is a blast." 7/10
MATT HARDY VS JEFF HARDY "Very low key and quite embarrassing. Typical by numbers, which is a shame because this is an I QUIT match. The end is original, but quite pathetic. The ladder drop is just dull. 3/10
THE LEGACY VS TRIPLE H, SHANE MCMAHON AND BATISTA "One hell of a match. Though Legacy are quite bland and Randy carries his team, he does so well. Shane is fun to watch, Batista is quite repressed though. Triple H is brilliant in his execution of the match, and to a suprise ending." 10/10
JOHN CENA VS EDGE "A LAST MAN STANDING match. This is an epic in its own right. Cena has improved and it shows. Edge is the perfect heel, reminding me of Brock Lesnar, in that the crowd hate and respect him at the same time. I was a bit annoyed at the Cena 'boos' because he does a very good job. They sell eachothers moves, they counter attck each other, they fight in and out of the arena. The whole thing has an epic feel of the attitude era. Really dreadful ending though which spoils the amazing build up. WWE does TNA." 9/10

best of the year5
backlashh 2009 is the best event of 2009 and im saying that even after a very pleasing bash and a solid summerslam which aired last night,it was an event that was eager to put some of the poor decisions from wrestlemania 25 and it did that and more.
The event was filled with quality matches, great feuds and a real desire to be the best, john cena and edge put on one heck of a last man standing match, the WWE titkle match was also class and christian and jack swagger put on some match,it was flawless really,a job well done.
