Customer Reviews
I beg to differ
I know I am going to get seriously panned for this. Firstly context- I am a massive americana fan, Son Volt, Jayhawks, Felice Brothers etc. I like a pleasant song as much as anyone. I bought this album a few weeks ago. And do you know what, initially I was drawn in, the vocals are superb, really nice sounding guitar work and so forth. But suddenly I became aware of its tedium. It is nowhere near album of the year, its ok but it is not brilliant, in fact the more I take in the production, which is very lush and atmospheric, it strikes me as a self indulgent album. How can something be so utterly brilliant when two of the tracks quite litterally repeat the same vocal line over and over.Union street stands out as a truly great track, but one great track does not make a great album.I like this album, I just feel some perspective is needed, because it simply is not a great album, its tasteful, snoozy, at times beautifully sung but come on there are lots and lots of albums out there that wipe the floor with this one. Before you cast me down with a minus vote consider this-have you really not heard a better album this year?
Stone Cold Classic
Simone Felice, erstwhile drummer of The Felice Brothers, and sometime George Clinton collaborator, Robert 'Chicken' Burke, have come together to create what is surely one of the finest American albums of this, or any other, year. Moving away from the rambunctious Band-styled rhythm and blues of the Felice Brothers to a more spaced-out, cracked country soul, Nothing Gold Can Stay gives Simone plenty of room to stretch his lyrical wings; his stark tales of growing up in the States bear comparison with the finest, dustblown US fiction. Check closer (and album cornerstone) One More American Song for evidence of a remarkable talent.
If you've been drawn to this strain of modern Americana recently, by the likes of Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver, or just find yourself nostalgic for the days of the Canyon cowboys, then you may just have stumbled across your album of the year. It has all the makings of a stone cold classic.
Magnificent
Wow. This album is just beautiful. Some of the tracks already sounded like old faithful friends after just a couple of listens. Have been listening to a vast amount of new (or new to me) and varied music recently, and just keep returning to this album time after time. Probably my album of the year so far - it is simply magnificent.
Oh, and just to add, if you get the opportunity to see them live you should make every possible effort to be there. Absolutely stunning.
