Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Over seven platinum albums issued between 1972 and 1980 Steely Dan helped define the soundtrack of the '70s, with hits like "F.M.", "Bodhisattva", "Reelin' in the Years", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Deacon Blues", "Peg", "Babylon Sisters" and "Hey Nineteen" . They reunited in the early '90s and have toured throughout the decade and beyond, releasing multi-Grammy winner Two Against Nature in 2000 and its acclaimed follow-up Everything Must Go in 2003. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. The Very Best Of Steely Dan features all these hits and more across two CDs.

Customer Reviews

5 star music. Beware of repackaging5
This album is a repackaging of "Showbiz Kids" which was a compilation released in 2005.

The track listings are identical and cover the period from 1972 to 1980.

The music however is nothing short of 5 stars, nicely priced and a good place for someone to dip their toe into The Dan's music.

As most of their albums are available at a bargain price I would also recommend checking those out.

Nice value - but incomplete2
I wouldn't normally review something that's yet to be released, or a record that I have no intention of buying (because I already own everything that this band has released), but it might be helpful to point out that this compilation doesn't contain anything from SD's most recent releases: Two Against Nature (2000) and Everything Must Go (2003), being restricted instead to selections from the seven records they made before going on hiatus in 1980. To be strict, this omission makes everything that follows the first sentence of Amazon's CD Description irrelevant.

It's not really clear why this is: although the recent records were on a different label, there's at least one other compilation (The Definitive Collection) that spans the full range of their career. Having said that, this collection is pretty good value for a 2CD set, and its contents are uniformly excellent. But - given the fact that this group has only released ten albums in thirty-seven years - I'd recommend just getting all the originals.

Not another Compilation / Hits Cd5
Having been a fan of SD since the begining, and seeing them twice in Leeds and Birmingham,I find another 'Hits' album unecessary. There are loads of them, people will already have these tracks in their collection.Dont know if i'm missing the point but these tracks have been remastered at least twice, what we want is some real Steely Dan stuff, something in the same vein as Aja,Thrill or Pretzel. I find the last 2 albums boring, what happened to all the top class guys on the early stuff.Bring back the Skunk,Denny Dias, and then we can really hear quality.

Keith Carlock is a great drummer, but a drum machine would do because, being a drummer myself,I find he never breaks sweat.Gadd always shone.Lets have some proper playing and then we shall see the real Steely Dan.

Till then enjoy this great music.
