Customer Reviews
Beware of "Always On Protection"
Be very careful not to get yourself signed up for their "Always On Protection".
I used my credit card to renew the McAfee that came with my Dell PC. I'm not sure if it was in the McAfee small print or not, but they then automatically re-renewed the software without warning taking an additional payment from my card! (Even though the PC was on it's last legs and due to be scrapped).
The automated e-mail which they sent out to 'thank me for my successful renewal' didn't even give clear contact details to cancel the renewal (e-mail replies were simply bounced). In desperation I logged onto their site and their server wouldn't even let me delete my credit card details, let alone cancel the "Always On Protection" or my entire account and personal details.
The only way I found to rectify it was to call their UK Home & Home Office sales line (0207 949 0107).
The way McAfee abuse their customers loyalty is enough to put me off buying their software ever again (even if it comes bundled with a Dell PC).

its like pulling your teeth out - avoid
Been a long-term McAfee AV user and I would not have it anymore even if it was free (and it is free from many banks, ISPs, etc now).
1. Its a resource hog. Takes 140MB of my 512MB memory (which is a lot considering everything else takes 110MB while idling). It takes a long time for its own control panel to start up let alone do anything.
2. You have little control over it - if you switch off one of the many components (because you need to) they may not disable properly and it will then constantly keep warning you that you are not protected. Then you also have to be careful what you click because its quick to re-enable everything. Why would you need to do this? Sometimes what you legitimately want to do is blocked.
3. The suites include lots of unnecessary programs - which would be OK if, once you install one and find that it interferes with something you want to do, you can disable it completely or un-install it independently. These non-essential components hog resources, block things you want, add little to your protection, or you can get much better ones for free elsewhere.
4. System requirements stated on their website are misleading (Minimum 256MB RAM? I don't think so!). I have WinXP system, had 512RAM, McAfee was resource hog but in Oct09 after an auto-update from McAfee, it started to consume 75% more - made system very slow! No warning, no choice. They say you can install it on Win2000 - only after three re-installs and about six microsoft component installs they don't warn you about.
5. Although their support system is now technically good, I have hardly ever been able to find the info I needed, and my one support experience was bad (not just poor). Also, watch out for subscription renewal costs much higher than you can buy it elsewhere (even with discount included).
They've wasted a lot of my life with their poor software quality and poor support & info. Check various forums and see the unhappy users (although there are unhappy users of all the major suites, McAfee are currently the worst of a bad bunch IMHO - even Norton is better).
Great Protection
Being an Internet Security package, McAfee is crammed with tons of features which we all need nowadays.
- The standard anti-virus and anti-spyware
- 2 way firewall
- enterprise grade anti-spam
- anti-phising
- site advisor
- stealth mode
- shredder
- parental controls
- data backup
Its a good security package, doesn't slow down your PC like other products, interface is fairly easy to use once your familiar with it and all the scans/updates can be done automatically.
Essentially for novices its as easy as installing and forgetting about it until you do get infected -- but i presume the interface will be as simple as it is now to clean up threats.
An alternative to consider is Norton Internet Security 2010. Although both offer robust protection, Norton's interface is second to none.
