Customer Reviews
A solid entry to this enduring series
This series has tracked the evolutions in music played on the Modern Soul scene since 2000. 'Modern Soul' is any soul from late 1960s onwards that has a modern, more sophisticated sound than the raw stomping quality of the 1960s. The series has tracked the early diversity in the music, the emergence of soulful house and soul-garage in the middle of the decade and now covers a wide base of international artists. It mixes new tracks from new soul artists across the world with selections from their own Expansions label and revived soul tracks from the 1970s onwards.
The Modern Soul scene is derived from the Northern Soul scene but has its own parallel identity. Sometimes Northern Soul fans can hear music such as on this CD and find it lacking in grit, pace and intensity. I was in this camp for years but as your ears age and 100% stompers suddenly seem exhausting the qualities of this music start to seep into your listening tastes.
It is often the revived tracks that stand out and here there are strong strong 1970s songs from The Impressions and Tavares plus an exclusive unissued Chaka Khan track.
Where opinion often divides is on the modern songs. There use modern technology and can sound a bit artificial or lacking in comparison to classic songs. Nobody is claiming these artists compare to classic artists but it is at least interesting to hear how the style is evolving.
The championing of international diversity does seem to dilute the US/UK based cohesion of earlier entries in the series. After a set that was widely thought to be too 'garage' in 2007, 2008 got the balance right. This year's is perhaps less successful but is priced reasonably, has good sound quality and is well worth your time.
Modern Soul isn't a form that often 'jumps out' and many great songs need a few plays to get under the skin. I find this is true of the Soul Togetherness selections. What might sound weak can sound wonderful in a couple of years time, look at the breakthrough of The Sunburst Band & Unified Tribe who were compiled many years ago on Soul Togetherness yet took years to really go overground.
Here are a range of artists being given their shot on a CD. While it might not compare to Expansions' own brilliant 'Leon Ware and Friends' recent set I think it's worth giving this some time and putting a few bob in the pockets of a label (and the artists) who are struggling through to bring us new soul music at a time when the music distribution sector is under such pressure that the label almost didn't make it through the year.
a dissapointment
i gave it 5 stars to start but after hearing it a few times it realized it lacked quality so two stars is now my rateing.three or four songs are quite good but the rest is rubbish i wont be grabbing this cd very often.
