Greatest Sci Fi, Fantasy & Horror Books
The Reality Dysfunction (Night's Dawn Trilogy)The Reality Dysfunction (Night's Dawn Trilogy) by Peter F. Hamilton
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.64
The God of modern space opera. Big books, epic in scale and technology and loads of intelligent space combat action. The first of the Nights Dawn series - read all his books !
Magician (Riftwar saga)Magician (Riftwar saga) by Raymond E. Feist
Buy new: £4.49 / Used from: £1.48
Not much to say here - I've read loads of fantasy and Feist is the best. The original Riftwar saga, Serpentwar series and the Empire series are just stunning.
Consider Phlebas (The Culture)Consider Phlebas (The Culture) by Iain M. Banks
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01
If Hamilton is the God of space opera then Banks is his slightly more literary twin. The Culture series of books is excellent - read them all but dont miss Inversions for a slight change.
Revelation Space (Gollancz S.F.)Revelation Space (Gollancz S.F.) by Alastair Reynolds
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
A bit more technical or hard sci-fi but still a bit opera and all the better for it. Superb stuff. His other books get better and better.
Altered Carbon (SF) (Gollancz S.F.)Altered Carbon (SF) (Gollancz S.F.) by Richard Morgan
Buy new: £5.00 / Used from: £0.35
Extremely good sci fi - a bit like Reynolds perhaps with more intense characters. Another must read author if you like Reynolds/Hamilton/Banks ...
The Many-coloured Land (The Saga of the Exiles)The Many-coloured Land (The Saga of the Exiles) by Julian May
Buy used from: £0.01
The first major fantasy series - Saga of the Exiles - I read, possibly what got me into all this. Gripping stuff. Read and marvel then read all his other series.
The Dragonbone Chair (Memory, Sorrow & Thorn)The Dragonbone Chair (Memory, Sorrow & Thorn) by Tad Williams
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01
Memory Sorrow and Thorn is an excellent fantasy series - again a must read - also read War of the Flowers, the Otherland series is a scifi/fantasy mix and not the best.
Perdido Street StationPerdido Street Station by China Mieville
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.03
I love these old-world gothic dark fantasy books and this is the best. A bit different but very enjoyable.
Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos)Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos) by Dan Simmons
Buy used from: £0.01
More excellent hard space opera. The Hyperion/Endymion books are classics.
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1) by George R.R. Martin
Buy new: £3.99 / Used from: £1.85
Absorbing fantasy in the best traditions. Excellent characters and rip roaring action. The series just gets beter and aint finished yet. Also read Fevre Dreams for a great vampire fantasy yarn.
The TricksterThe Trickster by Muriel Gray
Buy used from: £0.33
Fantasy horror better than King or Koontz. Essential rucksack reading.
A Shadow on the Glass (View from the Mirror)A Shadow on the Glass (View from the Mirror) by Ian Irvine
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01
Feist-like fantasy. I read this, the first of the series, then went out and bought the other three in one go !
The Sacred Art of StealingThe Sacred Art of Stealing by Christopher Brookmyre
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
OK so it's not sci-fi or fantasy but Brookmyre's books are seriosuly, dangerously funny (actually laugh out loud - honest) and very very clever. Even better if you're Scottish.
The Star Fraction: A Fall Revolution NovelThe Star Fraction: A Fall Revolution Novel by Ken MacLeod
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
I suspect he's actually Iain M Bank's brother. Again excellent sci fi just about operatic. His books get better but start with this one.
MarrowMarrow by Robert Reed
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £0.01
More hard action sci fi in the Reynolds vein. This first book is probably his best but they are all great especially Well of Stars.
SparesSpares by Michael Marshall Smith
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £1.28
Very good and slightly different sci fi. You've probably already decided if you like my favourites - if you do then trust me and read this.
Snow CrashSnow Crash by Neal Stephenson
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £2.97
The best cyberpunk and maybe better than William Gibson ? Also read Cobweb and Interface.
Eon (S.F. Masterworks)Eon (S.F. Masterworks) by Greg Bear
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £1.72
Probably my most straightforward big and hard sci fi choice. Great ideas.
SpankySpanky by Christopher Fowler
Buy used from: £39.73
It's supercool horror at it's best. Also try his Bryant and May detective books.
Premiers SymptomesPremiers Symptomes by Air
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.44
And this one is clearly not even a book. Close your eyes and relax. Lounge music par excellence.
NeuromancerNeuromancer by William Gibson
Buy new: £3.99 / Used from: £0.24
Couldn't leave him out could I ? I picked this cyberpunk classic but I could really have chosen any - they are all excellent.
O-ZoneO-Zone by Paul Theroux
Buy used from: £0.01
As far as I know this is Paul Theroux (seriously famous travel writer) only venture into sci-fi and I wish he'd visit again ! An unexpected treat.
Gardens of the Moon (Malazan Book of the Fallen)Gardens of the Moon (Malazan Book of the Fallen) by Steven Erikson
Buy used from: £1.44
A new addition to my list - vast epic tale of fantastic voyaging and battling. Feels like it is drifting a bit sometimes but it's always building to something. Stick with this series - great fantasy.
The Darkness That Comes Before (Prince of Nothing)The Darkness That Comes Before (Prince of Nothing) by R.Scott Bakker
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
This is really good fantasy. Great characters, great action. "Hard fantasy" if that means anything to you. Try if you like Erikson/Feist.
The Sword of Shannara (Shannara Trilogy)The Sword of Shannara (Shannara Trilogy) by Terry Brooks
Buy used from: £3.84
Classic fantasy but fairly predictable standard stuff - a sort of Lord of the Rings tribute series. This isn't a criticism - this is good easy reading.
