Great books - an eclectic mix
Magician (Riftwar Saga)Magician (Riftwar Saga) by Raymond E. Feist
Buy new: £4.84 / Used from: £0.68
A great fantasy book that begins an exciting series. Great characterisation, Feist weaves a vivid world with his words.
Night Watch (Discworld)Night Watch (Discworld) by Terry Pratchett
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £0.54
Night Watch is great. I've heard people say that Pratchett went through a stage of becoming formulaic and less inventive but this is still hilariously satircal but also has a darker side. Brilliant!
The Lord of the Rings (3 Book Box set)The Lord of the Rings (3 Book Box set) by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy used from: £73.09
LOTR. I considered not putting this on here, it's almost too friggin obvious. Nevertheless it is a brilliant book and if you have the time to read it in large chunks then do it - NOW.
FridayFriday by Robert A. Heinlein
Buy used from: £1.91
Friday. A superb book, I have vivd memories of this book after several years. Sci-fi but the storylines are quite grounded. This is tense, exciting, riveting stuff.
SundiverSundiver by David Brin
Buy new: £1.20 / Used from: £0.01
Sundiver. The Uplift Saga. This series is fantastic and while this book isn't the best by a long way it should be read and then you can get to the real gem in the middle of the series- Startide Rising
RingworldRingworld by Larry Niven
Buy used from: £0.01
This is slagged off a lot but it's a great concept novel. Slow burner though.
Dragonflight (Corgi Science-Fiction)Dragonflight (Corgi Science-Fiction) by Anne McCaffrey
Buy new: £2.97 / Used from: £0.01
Anne McCaffrey's Pern chronicles are some of the best ever novels. Some are better than others but it's all good.
Cat and MouseCat and Mouse by James Patterson
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £0.01
James Patterson. Scary. This isn't the first Alex Cross novel but it's the worst for screwing with your head. Great book!
The SilmarillionThe Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: £16.39 / Used from: £11.44
The history of Arda, the world of the Lord Of The Rings. Beautiful writing and it gives amazing depth to LOTR (and the film version). Only worth it after the others though.
The Ascent of ManThe Ascent of Man by Jacob Bronowski
Buy used from: £9.91
OK. See. An eclectic list. If you're interested in natural history (and you should be dammit) then this is the best. Read it someday,
The Descent of WomanThe Descent of Woman by Elaine Morgan
Buy new: £7.19 / Used from: £1.21
OK, not what is sounds like. More natural history from a different perspective (less thinking with your family jewels). Very very (very) interesting.
Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim BuckleyDream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley by David Browne

A biography of a two men, estranged father and son, both of whom died young and were devastatingly tragic losses to the music industry.

The JesterThe Jester by James Patterson & Andrew Gross
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £0.01
This book is NOT good... but........ a very(!) good read nevertheless. Somehow Patterson has invented the book version of big budget hollywood. (Very) Light entertainment.
His Dark Materials Trilogy: "Northern Lights", "The Subtle Knife", "The Amber Spyglass"His Dark Materials Trilogy: "Northern Lights", "The Subtle Knife", "The Amber Spyglass" by Philip Pullman
This is great, not sure about the first one still but it builds and builds and from the second book it's great.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4): Adult EditionHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4): Adult Edition by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: £5.19 / Used from: £0.29
Harry Potter, at least read the third or fourth one. You'll like it unless your really quite up yourself. NB The first two are a bit more childish but still worth a go. Page-turners.
Shutter IslandShutter Island by Dennis Lehane

Great. Now go read the reviews, they say it's great too.
