Iron Maiden - Discography Reviewed
Iron MaidenIron Maiden by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £8.18 / Used from: £4.98
Maidens debut. Still holds its own to this day, packed with classics (phantom of the opera, running free). An album your sure to love. Paul Di'Anno is the lead singer (and very good he is too).
KillersKillers by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.43
One of Maidens weakest albums. Although it does have its moments it can get a bit average at times. Paul Di'Anno is still on vocals here.
The Number of the BeastThe Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £5.38 / Used from: £2.98
Who hasn't heard of this album? Somewhat over-praised these days, contains some huge hits for Maiden and some so-so songs. The first album with Bruce Dickinson on vocals (the first of many).
Piece of MindPiece of Mind by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.49
First album with Nicko McBrain on drums. Much heavier and faster than Number Of The Beast. The songs are equally as good and I'd say this stands side by side with NOTB in terms of quality songs.
PowerslavePowerslave by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £5.28 / Used from: £3.74
Again another top quality album. It does dip a bit in the middle but its made extra specially good because of the songs, "Powerslave" and the epic "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner".
Live After DeathLive After Death by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £12.27 / Used from: £7.84
The Live album to end all Live albums. If you only buy one Maiden album, make it this. A huge performance from the Maiden lads and worth all the praise it gets.
Somewhere in TimeSomewhere in Time by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £5.08
Not the best Maiden album and a clear dip in quality. However there are some excellent songs from Somewhere In Time, "Wasted Years " being the best. "De Ja Vu " is a personal favourite.
Seventh Son of a Seventh SonSeventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £5.38 / Used from: £3.28
This truly deserves the praise it gets. One of the greatest metal/concept albums of all time, Based the the book "Seventh Son" and featuring classic song after classic song.
No Prayer for the DyingNo Prayer for the Dying by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £8.18 / Used from: £2.89
Maiden's first album without guitarist (and co song-writer) Adrian Smith. No Prayer suffers from a lack of inspiration and as such the album plods along rather than gallops.
Fear of the DarkFear of the Dark by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £5.18 / Used from: £3.58
One of Maidens weakest efforts. Ideas were running thin at this stage and the band were trying to enter "hard rock" territory. Bar the two classic tracks I can't say much good about this.
A Real Live Dead OneA Real Live Dead One by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £12.98 / Used from: £4.23
"A double Live album!" Don't get too excited. Aside several lack-luster performaces the song choices aren't the best either. For completists only.
Live at DoningtonLive at Donington by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £14.98 / Used from: £5.74
An improvement on A Real Live Dead One. This was one of Bruce Dickinson's last performances. It's pretty good overall and its a far better listen than the above. However its not the best out there
The X-FactorThe X-Factor by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £8.88 / Used from: £3.06
Bruce's replacement Blaze Bayley is on vocals here. Truly inspired stuff, one of Maiden's best albums. It gets slated by Bruce Dickinson fans but then they would say that. Recommended.
The Best of the BeastThe Best of the Beast by Iron Maiden
Buy used from: £18.99
Sadly now out of print, Best Of The Beast is the most comprehensive Greatest Hits Maiden have done. The 2CD version contained a few live treats not to mention some early "Soundhouse Tapes" songs.
Virtual XIVirtual XI by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £2.68
Second and last album with Blaze (he was later removed from the lineup due to his live vocal inconsistencies). It's not regarded very highly, which I'd agree with. It does contain a few gems however.
Ed HunterEd Hunter by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £13.48 / Used from: £3.89
"Iron Maiden have a video game!", again don't get too excited this isn't the best game in the world (far from it). However its a nice novelty and you get a fairly comprehensive greatest hits on here.
Brave New WorldBrave New World by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.48
Bruce Dickinson AND Adrian Smith return for a real epic album. It has some great songs on it "Wicker Man", "Blood Brothers". An excellent return to form.
Rock in RioRock in Rio by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £13.48 / Used from: £2.80
This album challenges Live After Death as one of the greatest metal Live albums. "Sign Of The Cross" is stunning and the whole set is explosive.
Edward the Great: Greatest HitsEdward the Great: Greatest Hits by Iron Maiden
Buy used from: £1.48
"Another Greatest Hits!?", I'm afraid so. This is probably best avoided however as it seems hurriedly put together. Certainly not what I'd call comprehensive.
Eddie's Archive - Anniversary Box SetEddie's Archive - Anniversary Box Set by Iron Maiden
Sadly now out of print Eddie's Archive is a real treat for fans. Containing 'Beast Over Hammersmith' double live CD, a B-sides double CD and 'BBC Archives' live double CD. Recommended.
Dance of DeathDance of Death by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £5.28 / Used from: £2.99
A step up even from Brave New World. Dance Of Death has all the ingredients of a classic Maiden album and delivers on all counts. Highly recommended.
Death on the RoadDeath on the Road by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £11.37 / Used from: £2.06
The Live show from the Dance Of Death tour. Almost as good Rock In Rio, one of Maiden's top live albums. The band are on great form throughout.
A Matter of Life and DeathA Matter of Life and Death by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £5.48 / Used from: £1.33
Not impressed with this release. Production is poor (worst on any Maiden album) and the songs are over long and sometimes quite boring. Possibly the worst studio album Maiden have released to date.
Somewhere Back In Time: The Best Of: 1980-1989Somewhere Back In Time: The Best Of: 1980-1989 by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £4.80
And yet another Greatest Hits. It's becoming a bit of a joke now, I'd say if you want a proper 'best of' go with Ed Hunter or Best Of The Beast if you can get a copy.
Flight 666: The FilmFlight 666: The Film by Iron Maiden
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £7.00
Hmmm, I'd say for completists only. Another live album, although top quality performances, it isn't worth buying over earlier releases. Get the DVD instead.
