Listmania!
Books I have read in 2006 (in no particular order)
The Pirates! In an Adventure with CommunistsThe Pirates! In an Adventure with Communists by Gideon Defoe
Buy new: £1.20 / Used from: £0.32
More japes and horse-foolery with The Pirate Captain and his crew!
The HistorianThe Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Intelligent and gripping twist on the vampire tale, a little slow going - the pace doesn't pick up until the very end
Yes ManYes Man by Danny Wallace
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £2.50
I laughed out loud on countless occassions throughout this book, then blubbed like a baby as I read the final chapters coming into land at Naples airport. The cabin crew thought I was weird.
The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without DesignThe Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without Design by Richard Dawkins
Buy used from: £2.00
Worth reading just for the chapter on the evolution of sonar in bats. Dawkins writes science with a passion that you cannot help but be swept up by.
The Confusion (Baroque Cycle 2)The Confusion (Baroque Cycle 2) by Neal Stephenson
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £2.28
Excellent. Perhaps the finest collision of sword-fights, maths, whores, witty asides, commerce, Spanish dukes suffering from Tourette's, Jesuit Samurais, syphillis, and international intrigue!
Perdido Street StationPerdido Street Station by China Mieville
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £1.99
Quite a simple (though gripping) plot, that is made compelling by the amazing world that Mieville has conjured up. Some of his creations will blow your mind.
Revelation Space (Gollancz S.F.)Revelation Space (Gollancz S.F.) by Alastair Reynolds
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Good solid space opera, but I felt that the main plot line was a bit boring and wished that the author would delve deeper into the intriguing sub-plots and back-history
Thud!Thud! by Terry Pratchett
Buy new: £4.94 / Used from: £0.17
Trademark Pratchett, and Vimes at his second best (see Nightwatch for that!). I love the fact that Pratchett is getting angrier. A timely novel of the stupidity of religious/cultural squabbling.
The Dark Tower: Gunslinger Bk. 1 (Dark Tower)The Dark Tower: Gunslinger Bk. 1 (Dark Tower) by Stephen King
Buy new: £3.01 / Used from: £1.00
I had high hopes for this, so I'm going to trust everyone else and hope that the second book is the one that sucks me in...
The Winter QueenThe Winter Queen by Boris Akunin
Buy new: £2.31 / Used from: £0.01
A fun and wry thriller, shows plenty of promise to develop into a series of ripping yarns
The Traveller (Fourth Realm Trilogy 1)The Traveller (Fourth Realm Trilogy 1) by John Twelve Hawks
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Very disappointing. Uses every cliche in the same old way. Add one part highlander, two parts Matrix then sprinkle with a predictable and poorly written story
Gateway (S.F. Masterworks)Gateway (S.F. Masterworks) by Frederik Pohl
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £1.00
Has so much more potential. The main idea could have been used far more effectively as the backdrop to a sprawling space opera. Instead its used to hang-out some dreary and dated psycho-analysis
Friends, Voters, CountrymenFriends, Voters, Countrymen by Boris Johnson
Buy used from: £15.48
Reading this intelligent and gently humourous book has almost dispelled the image of a hopelessly blundering buffoon, almost! And though I'm no Tory, he does talk an awful lot of sense sometimes.
The AlgebraistThe Algebraist by Iain M. Banks
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01
My favourite SF writer. Galaxy spanning and brimful of marvellous ideas and creations; Banks also provides some truly hilarious moments. Highly Recommended.
Slaughterhouse 5: The Children's Crusade - A Dirty-dance with DeathSlaughterhouse 5: The Children's Crusade - A Dirty-dance with Death by Kurt Vonnegut
Buy new: £4.79 / Used from: £2.00
I agree with the reader's review titled "Cult classic rather than great novel". Vonneguts other SF books work much better as novels in their own right.
Going Postal (Discworld)Going Postal (Discworld) by Terry Pratchett
Buy new: £4.90 / Used from: £1.68
Not the most amazing Discworld novel, but then again, even a bad Discworld novel is still excellent and highly enjoyable.
The Big Over Easy (Nursery Crime Adventures 1)The Big Over Easy (Nursery Crime Adventures 1) by Jasper Fforde
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Just started reading this, and am already thoroughly enjoying it...stay tuned for my final opinion!
This Thing of DarknessThis Thing of Darkness by Harry Thompson
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Excellent re-telling of the voyages of the Beagle, the ship that took Darwin on his travels of discovery. Very good and all the better for being true!
Explorers of the New CenturyExplorers of the New Century by Magnus Mills
Buy new: £2.97 / Used from: £0.01
Darkly comic allegory, with an amazing revelation that will shock.
