An excellent hard-sf space opera.
InversionsInversions by Iain M. Banks

Lovely prose and an engaging narrative. A Culture book from the outside.
The Years of Rice and SaltThe Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01
An alternate history that is haunting and evocative. Dharmic history meets speculative fiction.
The Warrior-prophet: Book two (Prince of Nothing)The Warrior-prophet: Book two (Prince of Nothing) by R.Scott Bakker
Buy new: £8.11 / Used from: £0.65
A gripping, well-realised fantasy work. Better than the first in the series.
The Thousandfold Thought (Prince of Nothing)The Thousandfold Thought (Prince of Nothing) by R.Scott Bakker
Buy new: £6.50 / Used from: £0.67
Though more than a few loose ends are left untied, its still a satisfying finale for the series
Bones of the EarthBones of the Earth by Michael Swanwick
Buy new: £16.79 / Used from: £2.16
A fine book about time travel, evolution and the human quest for knowledge... Oh, and dinosaurs!
Hominids (Sawyer, Robert J. Neanderthal Parallax, V. 1.)Hominids (Sawyer, Robert J. Neanderthal Parallax, V. 1.) by Robert J Sawyer
Buy used from: £4.24
Intriguing social science fiction in an Asimovian vein except with interesting characters. The sequels get progressively more mediocre but fortunately you dont need to read them to enjoy this.
Fevre Dream (Fantasy Masterworks)Fevre Dream (Fantasy Masterworks) by George R.R. Martin
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.51
A fascinating tale that elegantly mixes horror with American history. Great characters too.
WhitWhit by Iain Banks
Buy new: £0.75 / Used from: £0.01
Fascinating! One of Iain Banks' best non-sf novels.
American GodsAmerican Gods by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £2.48
An engaging and interesting read. Perhaps doesn't quiet live up to all the hype but is recommended nonetheless.
Midshipman's Hope (Seafort saga)Midshipman's Hope (Seafort saga) by David Feintuch
Buy used from: £0.01
This was a real surpise. Well written, exciting and an excellent exploration of the naval sf theme which delves into the heirarchical society that would give rise to it.
Before They Are Hanged: Book Two Of The First Law (Gollancz SF S.)Before They Are Hanged: Book Two Of The First Law (Gollancz SF S.) by Joe Abercrombie
Buy used from: £2.14
A decent follow-up to the first book.
QuarantineQuarantine by Greg Egan
Buy used from: £5.47
Mind-blowing! If Philip K. Dick met William Gibson and wrote about Quantum mechanics it would read something like this.
The Illustrated Man (Voyager Classics)The Illustrated Man (Voyager Classics) by Ray Bradbury
Buy used from: £15.31
Rereading this gave a powerful reminder of just how good a writer Ray Bradbury is. Outstanding!
Every Man for HimselfEvery Man for Himself by Beryl Bainbridge
Buy new: £0.01 / Used from: £0.01
Beryl Bainbridge is a masterful writer. A truly gripping novel set during the Titanic's fatal voyage.
Letters from AtlantisLetters from Atlantis by Robert Silverberg
Buy used from: £0.01
Short and sharp. A time traveller returns to Atlantis to discover the ancient society's deepest secrets. Highly enjoyable!
The Briar King (Kingdoms of Thorn & Bone)The Briar King (Kingdoms of Thorn & Bone) by Greg Keyes
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £1.00
Brilliant! On the strength of this first installment I'd say this series is right up there with the elite of the epic fantasy genre. As soon as I finished I went scrambling for the next in the series.
The Charnel Prince (Kingdoms of Thorn & Bone 2)The Charnel Prince (Kingdoms of Thorn & Bone 2) by Greg Keyes
Buy used from: £3.50
A worthy follow-up to the Briar King, though noticeably, the writing isn't of the same consistently high standard. Still gripping stuff though.
Floating Worlds (Gollancz S.F.)Floating Worlds (Gollancz S.F.) by Cecelia Holland
Buy new: £39.04 / Used from: £1.75
A true SF epic - the kind of epic you don't really seem to come across even in these days of grand space opera, with the emphasis firmly on the characters and the societies around them. Outstanding!
Temeraire (Temeraire 1)Temeraire (Temeraire 1) by Naomi Novik
Buy new: £9.09 / Used from: £4.78
Fun, lightweight fantasy that mixes 'Master & Commander" style high-seas derring-do with dragons. The emphasis on the main characters and the development of their relationship gives it depth.
The Man in the High Castle (Essential Penguin)The Man in the High Castle (Essential Penguin) by Philip K. Dick
Buy new: £3.50 / Used from: £3.49
Re-read this gripping alternate history tale. Its a classic and deservedly so. Captures the essence of postcolonial life in a country defeated in war.
The Blood KnightThe Blood Knight by Greg Keyes
Buy used from: £4.85
The quality of writing drops another notch or two and there is some filler here, but its still an enjoyable read and the storyline continues to engage.
Malazan Book of the Fallen #7: Reaper's GaleMalazan Book of the Fallen #7: Reaper's Gale by Steven Erikson
Buy new: £56.33 / Used from: £84.66
The one I was waiting for! A good read, as ever, though with perhaps too huge a cast to be as gripping as any of its predecessors. Having said that, MBOTF is still the best fantasy series going.
PashazadePashazade by Jon Courtenay Grimwood
Buy used from: £1.71
An enjoyable blend of noir and cyberpunk in a novel setting.
The Curse of ChalionThe Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £0.17
A fine, fluidly written fantasy. Not earth-shattering, but certainly worth your time if you enjoy fantasy.
