Greatest Albums of the 90s!
The Sun Is Often OutThe Sun Is Often Out by Longpigs
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.49
Perhaps THE most woefully overlooked album of the 90s. Pre-Pulp Richard Hawley, Crispin Hunt's angst-tinged vocals, and some of the best tunes of the so-called 'Britpop' era. Utterly brilliant.
Expecting To FlyExpecting To Fly by The Bluetones
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.32
Though The Bluetones produced some great singles in the latter 90s and beyond, they never topped anything on this album. Much, much more than just the 'Slight Return album'.
MaxinquayeMaxinquaye by Tricky
Buy new: £6.08 / Used from: £1.60
I was a huge Massive Attack fan, still am - but this debut by Tricky shows how much M.A. had missed. Worth buying this album if only for 'Overcome', Tricky's vision of how Karmacoma should've sounded
August & Everything AfterAugust & Everything After by Counting Crows
Buy new: £3.48 / Used from: £0.69
So much more than just 'Mr. Jones'! Sit back, put your feet up, and float around in your own little space for 55-odd minutes of Americana perfection.
His 'N' HersHis 'N' Hers by Pulp
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.98
Everyone remembers Different Class, Pulp's real commercial breakthrough - but in my opinion, this is their best album. Edgier, less pop-polished, and Jarvis's lyrics at their best.
Blood Sugar Sex MagikBlood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.94
RHCP's greatest album by a mile...and one of THE greatest ever. Buy this album and hear the Peppers at the height of their powers. You will throw Stadium Arcadium straight in the bin!!!
BlurBlur by Blur
Buy new: £4.88 / Used from: £0.76
Blur's attempt at the US college sound. They got slated for it...we got their best album to date.
OdelayOdelay by Beck
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.80
The album that catapulted Beck Hansen from one-hit-wonder to global phenomenon. Beck has made some incredible albums, and this is where it all begins. Buy this, then the rest of his back catalogue!
In It for the MoneyIn It for the Money by Supergrass
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £0.16
The point where Supergrass grew up and found their balls! Richard III and Sun Hits The Sky...do you need more reason to own this album?
O.K ComputerO.K Computer by Radiohead
Buy new: £5.28 / Used from: £1.12
Perhaps an obvious addition, and one that regularly tops the polls as greatest album ever made...but there IS a reason why.
ReplenishReplenish by Reef
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.24
Now, sadly, perhaps best remembered for the 'It's Your Letters' tune on TFI Friday. This, their debut, was loud, proud, west-country salty blues-rock. I love it.
Throwing CopperThrowing Copper by Live
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.68
In the mid-90s I spent a year working in the States...and this album was EVERYWHERE. Listen to it, and you quickly understand why.
Take DisTake Dis by Credit to the Nation
Buy used from: £1.84
I first heard the track 'Teenage Sensation' from a friend at school, and had to find the album. Quirky, uniquely British hip hop/soul/dance/funk fusion. Ahead of its time.
SuedeSuede by Suede
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.50
The album that should've catapulted Suede to superstardom. They hesitated, blinked, and Oasis happened.
Becoming XBecoming X by Sneaker Pimps
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.99
The track 'Six Underground' was everywhere, but the rest of this album has so much more to offer. Trip-hop, rock and dance all meld together seamlessly. Great stuff.
ConnectedConnected by Stereo MC's
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.99
Put on a good set of headphones, lie down on the living room floor, close your eyes...and wait for the opening beats of Track 1 to kick in. If you don't get up and dance, you're probably dead.
Medicine 4 My PainMedicine 4 My Pain by Lynden David Hall
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.97
Lynden David Hall was the UK's answer to D'Angelo and Maxwell. But better. Sweet, soulful, and smooth...a huge talent, taken away far too early.
Attack Of The Grey LanternAttack Of The Grey Lantern by Mansun
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £0.98
Stripper vicars, heaven and hell, and tax issues...it's all here. If Pink Floyd had watched vampire flicks and lived in cheshire they may well have sounded like this. A gem.
GuerrillaGuerrilla by Super Furry Animals
Buy new: £4.67 / Used from: £0.99
I couldn't have a list of the greatest 90s albums without including one of the best 90s bands: still one of the most creative bands in Britain, this album shows why.
Bring It OnBring It On by Gomez
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.98
Mercury Prize winning debut from Gomez. It's impossible to describe their sound here, it's uniquely their own - and bloomin' good too!!!
