My Fav Albums of 2008
We Are Above YouWe Are Above You by Clouds
Buy new: £9.79 / Used from: £9.98
In my opinion the most overlooked and underappreciated album of 2008. And quite possibly the best.
MeanderthalMeanderthal by Torche
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £20.87
Another stunning surprise album. After a mediocre debut and a promising EP, Torche drop this bombshell on us! Hailed as "Stoner Pop", decide for yourself...
FloatFloat
Buy used from: £23.80
Beautiful minimalist piano pieces from an amazingly talented guy.
Alas I Cannot SwimAlas I Cannot Swim by Laura Marling
Buy new: £8.98
How young Marling hasn't broken the mainstream is beyond me. Brilliant poppy folk album.
IdolumIdolum by Ufomammut
Buy used from: £33.33
Utterly universe destroying in it's psychedelic heaviness. The Italian kings of doom metal return and show us who's boss.
Death Magnetic Limited EditionDeath Magnetic Limited Edition by Metallica
Buy new: £15.69 / Used from: £4.49
Love them, loathe them, but you sure as hell can't ignore them. Death Magnetic was the return to form they've been due for so long. Awesome.
Music HoleMusic Hole by Camille
Buy new: £8.48 / Used from: £7.22
Another criminally overlooked artist. Absolutely nuts but she has a damn good ear for melody. Her performance blew away everyone else at The Big Chill this year.
ThirdThird by Portishead
Buy new: £8.48 / Used from: £4.00
One of 2008's most discussed albums. For me, a triumph and thankfully I am not alone. Unbelievable live too.
Modern GuiltModern Guilt by Beck
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £4.45
Beck cuts to the chase this time and once again delivers. One of my favourite artists and by the way things are going, always will be.
The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's SkullThe Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull by Earth
Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £8.00
Gorgeously uplifting and hopeful instrumental music. Completely uncategorisable and indescribable, just get it and listen for yourself.
To SurviveTo Survive by Joan As Police Woman
Buy new: £5.38 / Used from: £4.50
Took a while to grow on me as I was a bit disappointed at first as it doesn't quite live up to her debut. But it's still a cracker. Joan is also one of the best live performers I've seen.
Litany Of EchoesLitany Of Echoes by James Blackshaw
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £4.95
'Cloud of Unknowing' was at the top of this list last year; the sheer joy of finding his music lifted it. It's a no lesser album to it's predecessor. More stunning 12 string guitar compositions.
A Single Book of Songs by Mammoth VolumeA Single Book of Songs by Mammoth Volume by Mammoth Volume
Amazon don't stock Mammoth Volume's 2008 album - L.B.F.H.B.D. as it was a free download. Amazing creative stoner rock.
Funeral MixtapeFuneral Mixtape by The Pack A.D.
Buy new: £10.79 / Used from: £5.99
Brilliant two-piece blues band in the vein of the Black Keys - but they're girls... and they're a lot better...
HomeHome by Peter Broderick
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £6.95
But wait! Isn't this guy already in this list? Yep. This album is great as well, but this time he's penned us some mellow acoustic guitar numbers. Showoff!
Real Emotional TrashReal Emotional Trash by Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks
Buy new: £6.48 / Used from: £5.88
I only got into Pavement this year (shame on me!) and Malkmus' solo stuff is a lot more free flowing a jammy than Pavement, yet still poppy and catchy as hell. How can I complain!?
Nah und FernNah und Fern by Gas
Buy new: £15.98 / Used from: £21.97
Also got into minimal techno this year..... Wolfgang Voight's GAS project pretty much epitomises what minimal techno is. Lovely reissues in a nice textured box. Lovely.
Full Fathom Five: Audio Field Recordings 2007-2008Full Fathom Five: Audio Field Recordings 2007-2008 by Clutch
Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £9.93
I just can't get enough of Clutch. Although it's not a complete show and isn't a great replacment for actually seeing them live, the tunes & performance are still as fantastic as ever.
Take Refuge in Clean LivingTake Refuge in Clean Living by Grails
Buy new: £10.79 / Used from: £5.11
Grails are possibly the best instrumental band going at the moment, and that's saying a lot. This little EP is a stunner. Just try and pigeon-hole them, I dare you...
Tempel [VINYL]Tempel [VINYL] by Colour Haze
Buy new: £14.19
Unfortunately Amazon don't stock Colour Haze's latest album; ALL. A trippy, heavily 70s inspired journey through stoner rock. Great stuff.
Crippled LuciferCrippled Lucifer by Burning Witch
Buy new: £13.98 / Used from: £8.64
One of the cornerstone, essential bands of the modern extreme doom scene. Their entire back catalogue kindly reissued on two plastic discs. Cheers Southern Lord!
ElectrocutionElectrocution by Unearthly Trance
Buy new: £12.69 / Used from: £6.92
Another doom album. Unearthly Trance have been around for a while and they show it with their latest ear pummeling. Mixing in more black metal with their trudging doom this time.
War Metal Battle MasterWar Metal Battle Master by Lair of the Minotaur
Buy new: £14.19 / Used from: £6.75
If the sound of medieval battle could be represented through a 4-piece band, then this is as close as you'll ever come. Metal enough for ya!
Doomsdayer's HolidayDoomsdayer's Holiday by Grails
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £6.49
This was a massive disappointment for me, coming after three unbelievable releases. Yet, if you take a step back, you realise it's still a great album.
A Grave Is a Grim HorseA Grave Is a Grim Horse by Steve Von Till
Buy new: £14.19 / Used from: £10.67
Heavily old-world-folk inspired music from the Neurosis vocalist. Sombre, textural and deep. Great stuff. Cheers for reading!
