Bleed Like MeBleed Like Me by Garbage
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.96
Good solid pop music. Rocks out with added electronic production. Very appealing music.
10,000 Days10,000 Days by Tool
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £5.50
Not as good as it could be but still excellent obtuse prog-metal filled with real venom. Great singer.
Someone to Drive You HomeSomeone to Drive You Home by The Long Blondes
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £0.37
Very literate and melodic pop music. Feels like a female companion piece to Lloyd Cole & the Commotions excellent "Rattlesnakes" album.
Fantastic PlayroomFantastic Playroom by New Young Pony Club
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £2.17
Competent dance-pop. Every track sounds the same and the lyrics are nothing great but it does sound very good.
With TeethWith Teeth by Nine Inch Nails
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.98
NIN are a great band and this might be their best album. The aim seems to be to keep it simple and just make as big a noise as possible.
The Great Unwanted (Ruffa Lane)The Great Unwanted (Ruffa Lane) by Lucky Soul
Buy new: £9.79 / Used from: £5.68
A modern take on 60’s soul music with some crunchy, noisy music to back up the singing. Probably better than Duffy & Adele.
The Back RoomThe Back Room by Editors
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £1.44
Patchy album but the good songs are brilliant.
The CureThe Cure by The Cure
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £1.33
I think this is their best album. Takes a few listens for the songs to appear out of the noise but well worth the effort.
Hail to the ThiefHail to the Thief by Radiohead
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.99
It might not be as heavy as The Bends, proggy as OK Computer and as arty as Kid A, but it's by far their most melodically appealing & easily digested album.
Super Extra GravitySuper Extra Gravity by Cardigans
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.94
Imaginatively icy pop music.
American III: Solitary ManAmerican III: Solitary Man by Johnny Cash
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £4.02
The most consistent of the five American albums. The covers of One (originally by U2) & The Mercy Seat (Nick Cave) are amazing.
Can'tneverdidnothin'Can'tneverdidnothin' by Nikka Costa
Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £8.32
Very funky pop music, and she has a great voice.
At War with the MysticsAt War with the Mystics by The Flaming Lips
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.69
The way it’s produced with the guitars and bass being digitised in strange ways sounds amazing. Some great songs and a few thrashing rockers.
How To Dismantle An Atomic BombHow To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb by U2
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.62
I know U2 through their Best Ofs. I find the albums to be hard going but I like this one. Fairly consistent & enjoyable enough.
Show Your BonesShow Your Bones by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Buy new: £3.48 / Used from: £2.51
Not as good as Fever To Tell and disappoints on the first few listens. Stick with it & you’ll find it’s a very good solid album.
This Is the LifeThis Is the Life by Amy MacDonald
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.94
Sounds good though the lyrics can be a bit twee on some songs.
SupernatureSupernature by Goldfrapp
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £1.64
Very good perverted electro-disco pop music. I’ve heard it way too many times & it has to be said there is a fair amount of, if not filler, then weaker tracks on it. Black Cherry is also good.
AbsolutionAbsolution by Muse
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.99
Loud pompous music that rarely slows down to take a breath. Sounds great and rocks out with conviction. "Black Holes & Revelations" album is almost as good.
I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings TooI Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too by Martha Wainwright
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £4.24
Up-tempo singer-songwriter. Good solid songs. "See Emily Play" by Pink Floyd is covered. See also Bat For Lashes and My Brightest Diamond for good Goth style female singer-songwriters.
Get the GoreGet the Gore by Gore Gore Girls
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.63
Retro girl-group garage band. Very energetic and really rocks out.
Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of OrpheusAbattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Buy new: £9.88 / Used from: £3.50
Annoys me as he rarely ever rocks out, instead preferring slow piano ballads. This is a whole album of HEAVY ROCK with a mass of backing vocals & another album of HEAVY urgent ballads. His best release
eMOTIVeeMOTIVe by A Perfect Circle
Buy new: £10.88 / Used from: £5.42
Tricky prog-metal-pop band doing cover versions of songs about the human cost of war & conflict. I enjoy it & I listen to it on a regular basis.
Waiting For The Sirens' CallWaiting For The Sirens' Call by New Order
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £0.85
Their fans have issues with this but I think it’s one of their strongest albums. Rocks out a bit more than usual. Get Ready is also a solid album.
StraysStrays by Jane's Addiction
Buy new: £10.88 / Used from: £1.98
Very strong, powerful album that is almost as good as their two previous masterpieces of eccentric funky heavy metal.
Beauty & CrimeBeauty & Crime by Suzanne Vega
Buy new: £10.88 / Used from: £3.43
Big disappointments: Beauty and Crime by Suzanne Vega, Year Zero by Nine Inch Nails & Endless Wire by The Who.
