Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.49 The four tops are probably the best showcase for the songwriting of Holland-Dozier-Holland- a few misses here, but this is real pop/soul gold.

Buy used from: £44.99 Not as good as With a Lot o Soul, but even so this is another excellent motown album. Very few of these tracks appear on motown compilations so it is a worthwhile purchase.

Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £5.98 Where do you know these songs from? Well from other southern soul artists and even Tom Jones! A truly great songwriter, and underappreciated singer this cd shows some classic southern soul.

Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £3.99 Take your pick of Sam & Dave albums, this probably edges it as the best one. Be careful- there are a few compilations with the same title- it is much better to hunt down the original albums.

Buy new: £10.29 Sticking with the 'stax' sound (although technically he wasn't one of their artists) once again take your pick of his albums, but I've suggested this one as New Orleans is excusive to this album.

Buy used from: £23.77 Another worthy stax cd is this digipack containing three albums- exactly the same as the individual releases and they include the liner notes for each album.

Buy new: £7.98 Jackie Wilson's sixties releases are erratic at best, so the edsel history releases are the bets place to start as they categorise his releases by style rather than release date.

Buy used from: £21.09 Bell is one of the unsung heroes of southern soul- this LP collects his most important sixties releases up to 1967. Some of southern soul's greatest classics are here.

Buy used from: £49.55 Before Al Green, the king of Hi was Don Bryant. Contains his tracks with Willie Mitchell, some southern soul affairs and some funky sounds that are way ahead of its time. Should have been a megastar.

Buy new: £2.98 / Used from: £8.86 The best fontella cd out there- contains pretty much all of her chess releases and the duets with bobby mcclure. Nothing as good as rescue me, but some very good uptown soul.

Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £10.78 Another artist that Chess sent to muscle shoals- and once again it paid off.

 | Everybody Needs Love & Feelin' Bluesy by Gladys Knight & The Pips
Buy new: £4.78 / Used from: £8.84 Along with the temptations and edwin starr, these albums are part of norman whitfield's sixties legacy. Gladys was capable of much more, but this is motown's greatest female vocalist.
