The Decade In Games
Half-Life 2 (DVD ROM)Half-Life 2 (DVD ROM)
Buy used from: £2.49
Could have gone with something a little less obvious, but this really is the finest gaming acheivement of the decade. Source engine is still holding out well.
Rome: Total War (PC)Rome: Total War (PC)
Buy new: £4.39 / Used from: £1.48
Creative Assembly completely destroyed my (admittedly small) social life with this masterpeice. The thought of how many hours I've spent trying to conquer Rome is depressing me.
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Buy new: £29.99 / Used from: £19.00
The Wii's finest acheivment. This took Mario to another level (if thats possible) and thus created one of the very few modern platform classics.
Team Fortress 2 (PC DVD)Team Fortress 2 (PC DVD)
Buy new: £9.99 / Used from: £8.49
The best multiplayer experience currently available. I never tire of the maps or the different classes.
Resident Evil 4 (GameCube)Resident Evil 4 (GameCube)
Buy new: £34.99 / Used from: £6.00
Maybe lost some of the scares of previous instalments, but this is certainly the best in the series. I love the Eastern European setting.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Game of the Year 2009 Edition (Xbox 360)Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Game of the Year 2009 Edition (Xbox 360)
Buy new: £29.59 / Used from: £14.99
Enjoyed the single-player, absolutely loved the multiplayer. This game will be remembered for years to come. Kinda like this decades GoldenEye.
Metroid Prime (GameCube)Metroid Prime (GameCube)
Buy used from: £4.00
Hmmmm, how come evryone seems to have forgotten about this gem of a game. Should be mentioned in the same breath as Ocarina Of Time and Mario 64. Superb.
Pikmin 2 (GameCube)Pikmin 2 (GameCube)
Buy used from: £22.48
Arguably the best direct sequel of the decade. Pikmin was a fantastic idea, but Pikmin 2 took that idea and ran with it. Addictive and deep, two things which rarely go together these days.
Advance Wars (GBA)Advance Wars (GBA)
Buy new: £39.99 / Used from: £6.98
One of the decades best strategy titles. Spawned many immitators but this remains the best.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2)Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2)
Buy used from: £0.98
Still the best in the GTA series. The size of the city was perfect and the music was inspired.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PC DVD)The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PC DVD)
Buy new: £8.99 / Used from: £6.46
O.K some people will moan that Morrowind isn't in this position, and my problems with the level-up system made me think twice. But I just simply loved exploring the lush area around Cyrodil too much.
ICOICO
Buy used from: £28.90
A absolutely beautiful experience. I fear it will never be appreciated as it should, but this is one of the true innovators this gen (or last gen if your being pedantic).
Okami (PS2)Okami (PS2)
Buy new: £16.96 / Used from: £11.90
A shameless Zelda rip-off, but ironically better than any Zelda released this decade (Phantom Hourglass pushes it mind). Another example of how colour can be applied to videogame art.
We Love Katamari (PS2)We Love Katamari (PS2)
Buy new: £37.90 / Used from: £23.35
WE LOVE KATAMARI!!!!!!!, well at least I did. I know I speak for the millions (ahem) of Katamari fans when I say that this is one of the freshest and most inventive games currently available.
Persona 3 (PS2)Persona 3 (PS2)
Buy used from: £23.90
Hasn't maybe been the best decade for JRPG, but this is a classic in any era. Superb classroom setting & wonderful characters combine.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo DS)The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo DS)
Buy new: £19.80 / Used from: £9.84
Did I mention Phantom Hourglass earlier?. This was the best Zelda of the 00's and one of the DS's highpoints.
MSR: Metropolis Street Racer (Dreamcast)MSR: Metropolis Street Racer (Dreamcast)
Buy new: £8.58 / Used from: £2.45
Still my favourite racing game. MSR was the first (to my knowledge) to use real streets. The team went on to create Project Gotham which is also fantastic.
Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360)Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360)
Buy new: £14.99 / Used from: £10.00
Oh how this games lets me re-live my youth. The years spent playing SF2 were not wasted, as I can now go online and show off my skills. Chun Li still rules.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GameCube)Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GameCube)
Buy used from: £35.00
The second appearence for the moustached Italian in my list. This game is achingly funny, and shows that a good script can go a long way to making a game enjoyable.
Bioshock (PC DVD)Bioshock (PC DVD)
Buy new: £19.99 / Used from: £1.99
One of the best FPS this decade. A superb setting and definetly features the greatest & most shocking cut scene of the 00's.
Metal Gear Solid 2 PS2 - Sons Of Liberty + (Bonus DVD)Metal Gear Solid 2 PS2 - Sons Of Liberty + (Bonus DVD)
Buy used from: £1.39
The one that Hideo Kojima got right. The balance of cut-scene to gaming is perfect, and the story is engrossing (if a little over-complicated). Will always be known as the definitive MGS.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (PS2)Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (PS2)
Buy used from: £0.20
One of the great surprises of the 00's was the fantastic return of this franchise. This was the best of the bunch and the use of time-bending controls was inspired.
Beyond Good and Evil (PS2)Beyond Good and Evil (PS2)
Buy used from: £5.79
Oh how I loved this game. Another which used the Zelda series as it's template and then filled it with loveable & caring characters. Jade is one of the decades best individuals. Essential.
Fallout 3 (PC)Fallout 3 (PC)
Buy new: £12.99 / Used from: £7.99
Another great return. Bethesda deserve great credit for creaing a game which appealed to the masses but still kept the spirit of the original games. The recent expansions have stained this acheivment
Left 4 Dead (PC DVD)Left 4 Dead (PC DVD)
Buy new: £21.48 / Used from: £19.95
My first play-through on this game blew my mind. Unrelentless and engrossing, this is how multiplayer should be. Valve are surely the developers of the 00's.
