My All Time Favourite Punk CD's(No Particular Order)
...And Out Come the Wolves...And Out Come the Wolves by Rancid
Buy new: £7.38 / Used from: £2.50
Where to start! From the delicious bass intro of "Maxwell Murder" to the countless anthems littered throughout, just punk perfection basically. THE must have punk release of the last 12 years.
Do or DieDo or Die by Dropkick Murphys
Buy new: £7.68 / Used from: £10.14
Ah,the Dropkick Murphys,1st and best release of their much copied (never bettered) Irish punk, from the abrasive crash of guitar to the mellow and heartfelt tin whistle/bagpipes nothing disappoints.
Punk in DrublicPunk in Drublic by NOFX
Buy new: £7.68 / Used from: £1.09
Nofx-a comedy band? No,elements of great humour but also an undeniable quality to everything they've done,my favourite by a long way,The Brews,Leave It Alone,The Cause-hey it's all fantastic!
White Light White Heat White TrashWhite Light White Heat White Trash by Social Distortion
Buy new: £9.29 / Used from: £5.12
Took me a while to fully appreciate just how good this cd actually is,i heard "Dear Lover" and "I Was Wrong" and adored them,it wasn't til i gave it a few more spins i realised how good ALL of it was.
The Terror StateThe Terror State by Anti-Flag
Buy new: £13.98 / Used from: £3.55
One of the most important bands to ever grace the punk scene, released after the gulf war this slammed "The War on Terror",the combination of great writing and memorable tunes makes this cd essential.
Its Time for the PeacocksIts Time for the Peacocks by Peacocks
Buy used from: £11.98
Switzerlands finest export since chocolate-wait scratch that, they are so,so much better. All their cd's are great but this just edges it,great use of quirky lyrics and sumptious upright bass.
InsomniacInsomniac by Green Day
Buy new: £4.78 / Used from: £0.91
Surely Dookie? Well,as much as i like Dookie i can't help liking "Insomniac" more, not the "purists" choice i guess but nonetheless my choice. "86" and "Walking Contradiction" are some of their finest.
Five Lessons LearnedFive Lessons Learned by Swingin' Utters
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £6.73
Another band who've got a shed load of wonderful cd's to their name,a gritty (often tagged "streetpunk" band) they are capable of writing some of the best quality punk in recent years-most found here.
The Living EndThe Living End by The Living End
Buy used from: £10.48
Australian 3 piece who utilise the upright bass beautifully, coupled with Chris Cheney's frenetic guitar playing and quality lyrics-you can't go wrong,it's an astounding piece of work, fabulous!
Good MourningGood Mourning by Alkaline Trio
Buy new: £9.88 / Used from: £2.49
Again, hard to pick a favourite but slipping past the winning post is "Good Mourning",sinister, dark, heartfelt and compelling,Matt Skiba's unique vocals make this so much better than so,so many others.
Scared StraightScared Straight by New Bomb Turks
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £2.75
Imagine Jerry Lee Lewis' energy mixed with The Rolling Stones preening, posturing arrogance and you get this beauty,"Professional Againster","Hammerless Nail" and "Look Alive Jive",all buzzsaw anthems.
Punk Rock ConfidentialPunk Rock Confidential by The Queers
Buy new: £8.79 / Used from: £5.49
Pop-punk brilliance from (in my opinion) the best. Combining frenzied guitarwork on songs like "I Didn't Puke" to the Beach Boys surf-stylings on "Don't Mess It Up." A band TRULY crafted from gold.
Hello Rockview/Losing StreakHello Rockview/Losing Streak by Less Than Jake
Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £1.01
Less Than Jake are the finest punk/ska band around, sadly seeming to have lost their way (and their horn section) on later releases, however 2 cd's for the price of 1 and they're both brilliant-a must!
GorgeousGorgeous by Guttermouth
Featuring some of the funniest lyrics in todays scene this boasts not only great comic timing but also a highly innovative use of change of direction evident on "Power Up" and "High Balls." Great live
Savin HillSavin Hill by Street Dogs
Buy used from: £11.81
The 1st release from the band created by the original lead singer of the Dropkick Murphys, less "Irish" influenced than his former band but the production and song quality are immense. Stunning.
Plastique ValentinePlastique Valentine by The Humpers
Buy used from: £5.08
A ferocious piano intro kicks off the title track, followed by the slick "For Lovers Only",from then on every other song reminds you just how much the world needs bands like this. Sadly missed.
Death By TelevisionDeath By Television by The Lillingtons
Buy new: £11.69 / Used from: £17.03
When Ben Weasel (Screeching Weasel legend) regards this as the best pop-punk cd ever released you listen and few could argue. Sci-fi themes run into buzzing comic book anthems every one a classic.
TotalTotal by Teenage Bottlerocket
Buy used from: £27.54
Although the most recent release on my list it's become one of the most important, An unbelievably catchy "Radio" starts things off, every song has real substance and is top quality. A gem of a cd.
Sing The SorrowSing The Sorrow by AFI
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.17
I'm sure this isn't the "lifelong AFI fans" most popular cd but for me it highlights all of their best attributes. The soft, mournful tracks through to the vibrant are equally evident and effective.
SwaggerSwagger by Flogging Molly
Buy new: £7.28
Often lumped in with the "Irish punk" crowd Flogging Molly are much more important than being tied down to a stereotype, listen to "Black Friday Rule" and you won't fail to be blown away. Infectious.
Fun in the DarkFun in the Dark by The Groovie Ghoulies
Buy used from: £5.50
Another band who have sadly recently split leave behind a legacy of greatness of which this is the pinnacle. Songs such as "Carly Simon" and "The Spell Is On" make this a modern day masterpiece.
Straight AheadStraight Ahead by Pennywise
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £3.34
A touch of political edginess is thrown into the mix on a couple of tracks but overall the same tried and trusted approach wins through, more punk than it's predecessor, full of top quality anthems.
Ghost Tigers RiseGhost Tigers Rise by Tiger Army
Buy new: £8.79
Few bands can pull off psychobilly/rockabilly/country tinged punk but these guys certainly can, each release seems to improve. "Santa Carla Twilight" and "Sea Of Fire" make this something very special.
Television City DreamTelevision City Dream by Screeching Weasel
Buy new: £8.79 / Used from: £4.10
Can't have a favourite punk list without having Screeching Weasel on it,simple fact. Lots of Weasel favourites on here "Count To Three","Dummy Up" and album closer "Burn It Down" are pure brilliance.
Let's GoLet's Go by Rancid
Buy new: £7.68 / Used from: £2.17
Where else to finish but with the mighty Rancid? An extremely close call as to whether this is as good as "...Wolves",not quite, but it's got some of the best "oi" anthems you'll ever hear. Marvellous.
