A book for "anoraks"
The cover says something about his writings being as "entertaining as they are enlightening". Not so! I don't like being defeated by book, so I diligently worked my way through through "1895 etc" and it really was hard work at times, overburdened with wordy explanations and, at the same time, somehow avoiding expansion on matters that really are interesting. The author obviously did his research and there are some chapters such as " The curious rise and fall of Leeds parish church" which are very good but, equally, others such as the "hidden history...." one are so dry that you would think they've come from the pens of different authors. All in all, too academic a text.
