Another job well done by Creative
It's only the OEM version of the card, so it doesn't come with a fancy box or anything like that. But what it does come with is a sticker, and a CD full of all the recommended software and drivers for it. The CD contains the SoundBlaster drivers, all of the control panel for it such as EAX control panel, speaker config, etc. Creative Media Source also comes with it, as does an automatic updater which is used to retrieve updates automatically off the web. Great for lazy people like me who don't want to navigate Creative's website looking for new drivers!
Before I had this soundcard, I was stuck with Realtek AC'97 onboard audio, and it's not really what I wanted. I record a lot of music off the computer, and it wasn't good enough. I have a Creative SB Live! in one PC, so I decided to get the next model up from that. The best settings for recording is to select 'What you hear'; you may have to increase the volume of your recordings in the software you use, but it's better than having the recording clipped like my onboard sound did.
The best thing about this soundcard is that you can alter the controls for the bass if you do not have any controls on the sub itself. In the control panel, you can have bass boost set by percentage and also change the cut off frequency, which will go between 10Hz and 200Hz. The sound quality is exceptionally clear and I find overall that the Creative drivers are much more compatible with other software, especially games, than my old onboard drivers. Good soundcard, not the newest piece of technology around, but it's affordable and gives you great output!
Value for Money
Ok, It's not going to be the best card in the world but if your looking for cheap and the best for your money this is it!
I just got the Creative Inspire T6100 speakers and the Audigy SE is a nice companion, compared to my onboard sound the main difference I noticed was the control over bass the Audigy had, the lower ranges where much smoother and distortion free (not that the sub was not brilliant in the first place), as for the sound quality it's what you would expect, I obviously cannot test it to it's upmost limit with midrange products.
One big advantage is the fact that the card allows for a Mic input aswell as the 3 leads that you sometimes find on some surround sound speakers.
If your into casual listneing like MP3's (which is my main use) the added quality of bass with this card is a great added bonus.
The software is not bad but it's not great either, I'm preety computer privy yet I failed to notice that you have to select an option in creatives software to allow CMSS 3D Surround which basically allows your other speakers to play sound (was confused as to why only 2 speakers and sub where playing). A great feature of the software is the subwoofer controls, there are ltos fo tweaks etc... that can take the bass preety low which is handy if you need to take it lower at night.
Conclusion: If your looking for a reliable alternative to onboard sound this is your card.
Excellent value upgrade for onboard audio...
I bought one of these to upgrade the AC'97 onboard audio on my system, and it has made a huge difference. Installation was easy, it just fits into an empty PCI slot, plug your system back in, reboot it and run the included CD to install the drivers. The Card has highly configurable audio options for surround sound, graphic equaliser and speaker selection from 2.0 to 7.1 as well as analogue or digital audio inputs.
The included Creative Media Source software is great for CD burning, MP3 conversion, organising your music library etc, so all in all I'd highly recommend this Card to anyone looking for an effective and inexpensive upgrade for either an outdated card or onboard audio.
