Excellent hard drive
Just got mine yesterday, and I'm really pleased with it. I already owned a My Book 320Gb before getting this, but needed more space. I've owned an Iomega desktop hard drive before, and this one is far superior. Iomega have worked very hard to improve their products. The old one I had last year was clunky, heavy, and made an irritating buzz all the time. This new one is light, and more importantly, silent. Transfer speeds are extremely fast; even faster than the My Book (both use USB 2.0). I'm actually that impressed with this hard drive that I'm thinking of getting another one.
The design of the drive is very nice, and the blue light is fairly easy on the eye. It's bright though; a lot brighter than the light on the My Book. The drive needs to be kept where it has plenty of ventilation though, as it does get a fair bit warmer than the My Book.
The drive doesn't come with any software disc (well, mine didn't). I don't mind though, all I want to do with an external drive is plug it in and start filling it up, not waste time installing drivers or unnecessary software. It is both PC and Mac compatible - mine worked fine on OS X10.5.1 straight out of the box. Highly recommended!
Iomega® 500GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive
This is an outstanding product worth investing in. I was doing some piece of work that required storage space of 486Gb and decided to go for the Iomega. It has a very modern design and its blue light means that it sits very well amongst my other gadgets. Data transfer is very fast and quiet (brilliant!). At this price, Iomega is definitely unmatched.
Looks good quality but is unusable without a UK plug adapter!
I got a 250gb IOMEGA external drive over a year ago and it's still working perfectly, so realising that I now needed even more space for backups and video files, I decided to get this 500gb version. The simple and sturdy metal styling is similar to my older 250gb drive and fits in nicely next to my PC's tower case.
Well it would have fitted in, except I now have to send it back for a refund, because like 2 other reviewers here, my drive came with a 2-pin plug power unit. (My older 250gb IOMEGA drive came with a proper UK 3-pin plug.) This means it is unusable without a suitable 2-to-3 pin plug adapter. Now, I know a plug adapter might only cost a couple of pounds, but I did not expect to have to buy one for a product that is actually described as being 'For UK Only'. Nor do I want to buy one anyway, because it would look very unsightly and be bulky and awkward to use.
I emailed Amazon about this 'plug situation' and after nearly a week they have told me that this drive is supposed to come with a 2-pin plug and that infact 'most electrical products offered by Amazon.co.uk are supplied with two-pin plugs as standard'...!? I find this frankly stupid as it means there must be lots of UK shoppers using Amazon.(CO.UK) to buy electrical products, who are having to buy an extra plug adapter or are having to go through the annoying process of returning their order... like me.
So, after I've got my refund, what do I do then? If I order another make of external drive from Amazon.(CO.UK) (eg. Western Digital's My Book 2), can I be sure that that one will have the correct 3-pin plug?.. The answer to that is now obviously NO! :/
