Good once up and running
I recently bought this adapter for use with a brand new desktop running Windows Vista, and it didn't work straight away. The first thing to note is that the drivers that come with the adapter aren't for Vista (at the time of writing), so make sure you have a cable connection handy for the following:
-download the Vista drivers from Belkin's website.
-You should also install all the available windows updates, as this will probably include an update for this piece of hardware.
It took me a long time to get this working as I hadn't realised the drivers were the problem. Once I did the above my adaptor worked fine. The connection speed is good - better than the wireless adapter on my laptop in the same location. It's backwards compatible with wireless G as well. In short, once I got it working I was happy with it. It also supports all the encryption standards - WEP, WPA and WPA2 (though again make sure you download all the updates).
If your PC isn't running Vista then you'll probably not have any of the above problems. Also note that you don't have to use the wireless connection software that comes with this - the windows tool will work fine as well.
Very fast connection but ...
IF YOU HAVE VISTA, DOWNLOAD THIS THING'S DRIVERS FROM BELKIN'S WEBSITE! This needs to be shouted because the device only ships with drivers for older versions of windows which don't work correctly with Vista. I spent many hours trying to figure out why my adapter wasn't detecting the router or could only get local connectivity (no internet).
Once I downloaded and installed the drivers everything worked perfectly, though for some bizarre reason it also installs a popular shareware video-capture program too (which I already had anyway).
The connection is very fast and I'm not noticing any depreciation of speed over my cable modem, which is impressive.
A great device but they should either ship it with Vista drivers or print very clearly on the box that you need to download them from Belkin's website.
A faulty product?
I have already returned one Adapter and i'm still experiencing problems with the 2nd replacement.
The adapter just stops working. Plugging it into a usb port that it hasn't been connected to. Makes the adapter work again but at some point it will stop working again.
Eventually, I will run out of usb ports to connect this to.
I noticed another customer was having problem with it:
I've now spent over a week trying to get this thing to work, and when it does finally connect to the router, I get a few minutes of use out of it before it stops responding... it's like the adapter just locks up, though Windows keeps going and I can use my other USB devices, but the network is no longer accessible, and in order to get it back it needs to reboot. I've now tried this adapter on 4 computers. It didn't work on any of them - they all had the same problems. It get's extremely hot, so that might be why it locks up after a few minutes of transferring data... I've since seen other people that have the exact same problem - so don't think I have a faulty adapter, but believe it's a badly designed piece of crap. When I contacted Belkin's tech support, they told me it was my pc that was the problem and that VIA chipsets have problems with this adapter... well guess what, I've now tried it on non-VIA chipset motherboards and have the exact same problem - lasts a little longer, but eventually still locks up. I even bought a brand new Intel Core 2 Duo pc now... and it won't work on that either. So it's going back... and I'd say steer clear of this thing!
(My PC is brand new).
