DVD Description
One Ocean. 20,000 Islands. A Quarter of The World’s Water.
The extraordinary wildlife, culture and history of this immense, fascinating ocean and its myriad islands are revealed in stunning detail in this acclaimed BBC series.
With its coral reefs, turquoise lagoons and dramatic oceanic atolls, the South Pacific is the archetypal paradise. But from the shores of Hawaii to Easter Island and a thousand tiny remote islands, this ocean holds some of the most bizarre and intriguing surprises on Earth…
The incredible photography and discoveries of this series capture the amazing natural sights of the region: from erupting undersea volcanoes to jewelled tropical reefs and from tiger sharks catching albatross chicks to giant crabs opening coconuts. It reveals how the islands’ isolation has helped evolve flesh-eating caterpillars, vampire bugs with antifreeze in their veins, a strange nocturnal parrot with a mating call like a bull frog and the fascinating monkey-tailed skink.
South Pacific also tells of the people whose ancestors journeyed thousands of miles to the islands. Some acquired new survival techniques such as the palolo worm-harvesting Samoans or the Solomon islanders who fish with spider webs and kites, while others developed bizarre rituals such as the Pentecost land divers who leap from 25-metre wooden scaffolds.
With incredible natural spectacles, dramatic footage and fascinating stories, South Pacific will change the way you view this ocean forever.

The reason they invented HD TVs
Once again the beeb have pushed the boundries, filming events and animals for the first time in a way never seen before. I'm planing a trip to the Society Islands and this dvd just makes them look so inviting.
I expected to see a little more history or background on some of the archipelagos; a little more island beauty afterall they are they archetypal paradise..Ok there are 20,000 Islands so naturally they can't feature them all but it seems to be mainly filmed in the Solomon Islands, Hawaii and New Zealand, there is nothing on Tahiti, just an aerial shot of Bora Bora and olny a brief mention of many of the other islands. but hey this is a nature program not the history channel.
This is a fantastic series, I watched it in one sitting, the sound track is also really alluring too. It did seem a little disjointed however and they repeated the one tiger shark shot 6 times; very unlike the BBC.
This series is trully brilliant but I couldn't help feeling it could have been better, like they ran out of time or something.. perhaps more internal beauty of the islands and less repetition? hence the 4 stars, but 4 BBC stars are anyone else's 10 stars.
It's......okay
I am Dutch. I Bought this item after reading reviews here. This disc is.....okay. Some of the footage is truly stunning. But only some. On top of that a few of the best clips have been redistributed over three episodes, as in repeated items. Narration could have been more lively, and the choice of music didn't help either. It constantly made me think of Africa, which has no relation to the subject. To summarize: to me, it looks like production of this disc was rushed, causing overall quality to suffer slightly.
If you like a good nature documentary this will suit you just fine. If you are looking for a great / very special / fantastic documentary, I can only advise you to look elsewhere.
Breathtaking !!
The only problem with the never failing quality of the documentaries produced by the BBC is that you just want to jack it all in and explore the world.
All the shots are stunning in there beauty and in a lot of cases show places and animals not seen before by more than a handfull of human beings.
Informative without being preechy and the addition of the featurets at the end of each episode make this the perfect package.
Owning all the BBC productions on Blu-Ray produced so far I would recomend this as an addition to anyones documentory collection.
