    About the maps

Satmap Active 10 Maps The maps are available on map cards that simply plug straight into the Active 10. No other computer or equipment is needed: this is a stand alone system that will work straight out of the box. The following map ranges are available:

  • National Parks (1:25k AND 1:50k)
  • National Trails (1:25k AND 1:50k)
  • Regions (1:50k)
  • Counties (1:25k or 1:50k)
  • Which map scale is best for me?

To gain the most from the great outdoors, make sure you get the right map for your activity.

  • Walking / Hiking: - 1:25,000 scale Explorer map. Especially when hiking it is important to know the terrain you are entering, a 1:25,000 scale allows you to plan your route as safely and accurately as possible.
  • Mountain Biking: - 1:25,000 scale Explorer map. Although a 1:50,000 should be accurate enough. If you are planning to go on particularly rough and potentially dangerous terrain, we would recommend you use the 1:25,000 for optimum safety and accuracy.
  • Family Cycle Riding: - 1:50,000 scale Landranger map would be sufficiently detailed for a family bike ride as it shows all the roads, country lanes and byways that are ideal for family days out.

    Great Unit Despite a Fall5
Despite some of the previous reviews, I decided to take the plunge and purchase a Satmap GPS.
Two reasons made me take this decision.
    1) I was keen on using GPS with a built in OS map as it somewhat removes the need for route planning in advance
    2) I am not keen on touch screen especially outdoors and with gloves.
So following the purchase and some initial handling and getting used to the menu structure etc the unit was put to the test in severe weather conditions and in mountainous terrain. What were the result ?
Battery life from the rechargeable pack was excellent, despite a day in the mountains there was only a slight drop in the power indicator. Satellite fix was quick and maintained throughout. Display was clear with good back light, and the tracking was positive to the OS paths. The compass was checked and was accurate as was the built in way point direction indicator. The trip data was clear and accurate when matched data from pre trip planning data. The ability to plan a route whilst out was a real bonus as worsening weather conditions lead to a route change half way.
It is a real confidence builder to see exactly where you are on the OS map
Lastly I managed to drop the unit 80ft down a crag and to my amazement, on recovery, the thing fired up again, fixed on satellites within seconds and promptly showed the route forward. I and others were well impressed.
Apart from this one instance the unit did not crash during the trip and you could hardly blame it for turning itself off after a fall like that.
All in all a great "button operated", OS mapping, GPS.

    Not worth the money!1
I was incredabley excited about this product on its launch and although the initial outlay of £350 seemed quite a lot (it is a lot) I treat myself to the unit and several mapping cards. The premise of a gps with ordinance survey mapping to which you can upload routes (in the gpx format) and dowload route data from trips was exactly what I wanted.

    The Reality has proved otherwise.

The unit really isn't reliable enough and I experienced software crashes at some very annoying times, from which the unit would not switch back on for some hours.

For this reason I returned the item without wishing to have a replacement on the single premise that:

mapping needs to be reliable and your own personal safety in the outdoors can depend upon the reliability and ability to read and have maps available. Needing to take a paper map and a(questionabley reliable) electronic unit defeats the purpose of one or the other. As the paper map has proved more reliable it goes without saying which you need to take.

In addition to the unreliability the satelites take an age to pick up and the pointer function is too slow for cycling purposes. Battery life is shorter than I expected and the laughably fragile battery connection is a design flaw.

Overall I have been very dissapointed

Excellent upgrades for the Active 104
Having owned a standard Active 10 since the early days and invested in various map cards for it, I wasn't sure that the Active 10 Plus would offer many more features. However, the product has moved on a long way from its initial specs and in my opinion is the best tool on the market. Although perhaps not the most user-friendly device and not without gremlins, once you get the hang of it, you should find it to be an accurate and reliable addition to your outdoor kit. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to go paperless geocaching...I import customised pocket queries (of upto 1000 caches) easily as gpx files using the free software that it comes with. The company that make Satmap are large enough to produce a quality product, but still small enough to listen to their customers.

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
