Hone your fly-casting skills in just a few hours!
The better you can cast, the more you'll enjoy fly-fishing. With good casting technique you can place the fly where you want it, effortlessly and with precision and grace, even when wind or obstructions conspire against you. In Master the Cast, George V. Roberts Jr., a lifelong fly-fisher and sought-after instructor, walks you through a course that breaks the complicated mechanics into a few simple components. Then, with the help of hundreds of photos and illustrations, he shows you how to master these in seven concise lessons, including:
- The Roll Cast, which builds your rod-arm mechanics (how the hand, wrist, forearm, and upper arm function to make the rod work)
- The Pick-Up-and-Lay-Down Cast, which forms the foundation of all straight-line casting
- False Casting, which allows you to keep the fly airborne for several strokes before delivering it
- plus Shooting Line, Casting in All Planes, Drift and Follow-Through, Off-Vertical Casting, and an advanced lesson on Hauling
Master the Cast is an indispensable resource for all fly-fishers, beginner to advanced, that will have you casting flies with confidence, precision, and consistency after only a few hours' practice.
"Most fly-fishers cast mechanically without understanding the mechanics of the cast. But understanding precisely what is going on and why is what makes a good caster into an excellent one. George Roberts understands casting mechanics inside and out, and his Master the Cast will help you do just that."âJames R. Babb, editor, Gray's Sporting Journal

Customer Reviews
I agree - this book may just be THE definitive casting reference work.
Like any reference work (or text book) one has to concentrate on every word that is written in this book and then go over it again as many times as is necessary for the message to sink in - and then get out your fly rod and practice. I would recommend the use of a highlighter to emphasise the key phrases in order to enable you to lift out of the text those parts that are particularly important to you as an individual, even at the expense of defacing it. This is after all a learning tool, not a classical work that requires appropriate reverence.
I too am endeavouring to become a qualified game angling instructor, but very quickly realised after day one of the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling Course (run by the Salmon and Trout Association here in the UK) that I attended, that my technical casting knowledge was woefully inadequate. The course (perhaps surprisingly) does not teach casting or how to teach casting, so I am now in the process of putting this right and learning (in depth) about this critical game angling skill - and Hey Presto, here is part of the answers to my prayers. (The other part is taking lessons from an established master caster!)
A word of warning; I would suggest that you pace yourself through this book, take it a step at a time, and don't try to rush on to the next bit before you have fully assimilated each stage.
if you buy only one book on casting it should be this one.
being possibly the lowest priced book on the subject out there, the contents come as a bit of a surprise, for beginners its thorough, for intermediates there is extra detail and it goes further, much more than the same old mechanical instruction, one of the few books or dvd's that actually does help in practice.
Master The Cast
This is THE book on fly casting. Everything's here, however it's not particularly well written and extracting the information is hard work. But if you're determined enough, and can persevere with the author's impenetrable style, then you'll put yards on your cast.
