Privileged glimpses into anglers' Utopia.
As well as brown trout in gin-clear chalk streams, sea trout in Norwegian torrents and salmon in gloomy Scottish lochs, this collection features the pursuit of bream in Black Country canals, carp in brooding ponds, barbel on the Thames, pike in unfished castle moats and many, many more. There are even some accounts of the pursuit, by British anglers of course, of foreign fish such as the mighty mahseer of the Middle East. Welcoming inns and pastoral idylls provide the setting.
Although Walton, Sheringham, Francis and BB himself are well represented in this anthology, its charm lies in the rare or specially commissioned pieces, and in the thoughtful comments of the editor. Some of the more eccentric contributions stay in the mind - an almost obsessive account of night-fishing for bream; meticulous instructions on how to stuff and mount a fish.
This is an angler's book for all time, and the Watkins-Pitchford etchings make it a thing of beauty. Since I was given this book, it has lived up to its title and has never left my bedside table.
