Customer Reviews

CHECK THE DISCS VERY CAREFULLY2
Sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but for those who order this box set, I urge you all to check through the discs very carefully on arrival. A fair number of discs show what appear to be residual glue marks from what I assume to be from the glue that's used to construct the replica cardboard sleeves that house the discs.

I notice that on the American Amazon.com a reference to this particular problem is made on the Miles Davis Community board.

As a consquence, I've arranged to return the set back to Amazon for a refund.

What should of been the reissue of the year has been spoiled by the poor construction of the replica sleeves packaging. I'm terribly disappointed.

ADDITIONAL FOOTNOTE @ AT DECEMBER 3RD, 2009

I see on the American Amazon.com a note added by Amazon and I quote:

"Please Note: We have been notified that there is a manufacturer defect with this product. We are working with the manufacturer to get this corrected and have the product available again. We will be notifying customers who have already ordered the product to alert them to the issue and offer a resolution."

Not sure if this applies to those orders made at Amazon.co.uk but I'm glad that the issues raised by concerned buyers is being attended to.

Brilliant Design, Very Poor Production - it's being returned!1
When I saw the first two reviews yesterday, I was really hoping that the glue problem that they mention affects only a small number of these sets. However, mine arrived today and it's exactly as they described. I've checked through all the disks and this is the pattern:

- All the disks in "gatefold" sleeves, i.e. the doubles and a few others where the disk goes in from the centre, look absolutely fine to me.

- ALL EXCEPT ONE of the disks in single sleeves, where the disk goes in from the outside have some kind of residue mark. The only one of these single sleeve disks that looks OK is "Miles in Berlin". Many of these sleeves are very poorly constructed anyway and one or two are coming apart, so it seems that most of the adhesive used has ended up on the disks!

I'm very disappointed and very annoyed in equal measures. I'm not even going to try to play any of them and my set is going straight back as well.

I just hope that Amazon give Sony Music a real roasting over this apparent total lack of any kind of quality control - either during or after production.

** An update 01/12/09 **
Well a week's gone by since I reviewed this very shoddily produced set. I still haven't seen a single word of apology or anything else directly from Sony/Columbia. However, I have just noticed this on the sale page of the US Amazon.com site:

"Please Note:
We have been notified that there is a manufacturer defect with this product. We are working with the manufacturer to get this corrected and have the product available again. We will be notifying customers who have already ordered the product to alert them to the issue and offer a resolution."

I would really like to have this set and on the music alone this would have got five stars from me rather than one, but at the moment I can't see any point in ordering a replacement. So I'd like to know what Amazon.co.uk 's attitude to this is. Please tell us! I realise it is not Amazon's fault but surely they do have a very significant interest in sorting it out - I understand it was sold exclusively through Amazon in the USA. On the basis of comments from purchasers they must have had a lot of returns.

Nice box with a glue problem5
First, this is a beautiful box with cardboard sleeves (replicas of the original lp sleeves).
The sleeves are a little bit smaller than the japanese ones, but they are good enough for me if you
see the price, japanese paper sleeves are a lot more expensive.
Most albums are remastered in 24 bit, also the seventies lives albums sounds better than the
20 bit japanese versions (mastersound). Agharta and Pangaea sounds like the japanese 24 bits remasters.
The "eighties" albums sounds better than the original releases, equal or better than the 20 bit mastersound releases. We Want Miles sounds a lot better than the original, also the bonus tracks #from Miles, Miles, Miles#are remastered. The sound quality of this box is good. The Isle of Wight concert #35 minutes# sounds superior.
The 1967 concerts on DVD are very nice and the quality is a lot better than the bootleg versions.
The glue problem: Most single discs has some glue on it. I have cleaned them without problems.
Take your thumb and rub off the glue, or lightly take thumb nail and scrap off glue and then rub, also a soft
tissue with some water will help. All my single discs are clean now without scratches. It takes an hour to do it.
Off course it's a sloppy way of packaging. If you don't want to clean the single discs yourself,
then I advise you to return the box.
For me this is a nice box with a lot of good music.
