Caught By The Crimson King!!5
Received the discs this morning and have just played the 5.1 mix in surround sound. Its the best thing I've heard in years. The seperation of the instrumentation is achieved with such an attention to detail that the room really does become a magical space, the court of the crimson king indeed. Just pick out the bass drum in the title track; or hear the clarity of Fripp's majestic power chords in 'Schizoid Man' taking turns to appear in each of the four speakers. It's like hearing the album for the first time with a new set of ears and represents a massive advance in quality from the previous anniversary edition...and I haven't even delved into the extras yet! This will keep anyone going until the surely definitive 50th Anniversary Edition.

Caught by the Crimson King5
What have we got?
CD with the original album with a new stereo mix plus bonus tracks.
DVD with a multitude of extras:
1) 5.1 remix in MLP (DVDA) and DTS (for all DVD players including Blu Ray)
2) New Stereo version in MLP (DVDA) and PCM (for all DVD players)
3) Hi Rez. Stereo original mix of the album MLP (DVDA) and PCM (for all DVD players)
4) A Video Live King Crimson from Hyde Park with the proper live soundtrack
5) Bonus tracks in 5.1 and stereo.
6) A booklet with sleeve notes from the enigma that is Robert Fripp

The sound quality is excellent not suffering from the curse of modern production this is pretty dynamic. The music is both well played and is heavy-progressive-jazz (That is really not a bad thing), 20th century Schizoid man outstanding and benefit very much from the sourcing of the original premix tapes and a presentation with all instruments isolated in a way that was not available until the recent recovery of these tapes. Moonchild has been tightened up a little all with the approval of Robert Fripp. The surround mix discrete dynamic and opens up the sound field using the rears in a sympathetic way, this really is demonstration stuff.
Genesis fans maybe jealous that this has both the new and old stereo mixes for the fans to choose,
If only all reissues were competed with this much care and attention to detail. Music fans buy and you won't be disappointed, this really is good.

The wonder of new technology5
I know, it's impossible to write a review before a product actually hits the shelves, right? But from what I've heard of the technology employed here, it's hard not to get excited by this release.
Let's face it, for those of us of a certain age, this was the first real Prog album to really set the world alight. Well, in my case, Oxford!
But for me, the one problem that has plagued all releases of ITCOTCK so far, even the so-called superior vinyl versions, is the actual recording itself.
Unfortunately, the demands of the music here was always way ahead of what recording equipment was capable of producing at the time. Let me try to explain what I mean.
In the old black and white world of analogue tape, multi-track studios were very much in their infancy during the 60's. This album would have been recorded on 8 track, which I think would have been the best available in those days.
Today, we have unlimited tracks available due to the wonders of digital computer recording.
Well, from what I have read, Robert Fripp has found the original session tapes, which basically means that literally for the first time these recordings can be placed onto as many tracks that they need within the computer and played back simultaneously with little of no signal loss or distortion.
So providing those tapes have not degenerated in all the years since the first release, the potential for something very special on this release is great indeed!
You see, in order to fit all those instruments onto 8 tracks, the producer would have to "bounce" 2 or 3 instruments on to the same track, which would have meant the loss of individual control of said instruments. So, if, say there were 2 guitars on 1 track and they wanted to increase the volume of one over the other, tough!
The same goes for things like eq and effects.
Also, the other nasty effects of "bouncing" tracks are the increase in noise. IE. Tape hiss, reduced dynamics, and much higher levels of distortion.
But now, with modern studio technology at their fingertips, each instrument can exist in its own space, in best possible quality.
There are those who will create a great deal of fuss over this re-issue, saying we should leave these recordings alone. Let them be. Well, I can understand that point of view. However, I'm sure the original mix will be available for a long time yet, even if it's on Ebay. And I would suggest that, for those who love this album as I do, you will have the original in some form or another anyway.
I'm sure that this new version, either the new stereo mix or the 5.1 surround mix, sorry didn't I mention that before? Both will have their critics here and elsewhere, but I would urge people just to listen without prejudice to what's on offer as a different view on a truly great album from a ground-breaking band.
