Surprisingly different4
Watched this DVD with my Bible study group and found it very good as a short stop-gap between other things. In essence it is a four section DVD (with two booklets) which covers the 4 chapters of the book of Jonah. With each section, Jeff Lucas discusses a certain topic relating to the chapter.
The sessions are set in the Madejski Stadium (home of his favourite team: the Reading Royals), and football analogies pop up throughout. The stadium is, of course, empty but Mr Lucas brings a captivating presence to the place.

Section one is 'The Passionate God' and is mostly about the whole book and God's impact, rather than chapter one as such. As an intro it really struck me as potent and, considering I didn't know what the DVD was about, it served well to outline what he wanted to say. There is a little on chapter one, though he mainly talks about 'Passion'.

Section two is 'Life after Failure' - about redemption from sin, following Jonah's repentance from within the fish. Redemption and sin are covered well and he concludes with the idea that repentance isn't about going back to the temple and self-flagellating, but more following what God wants us to do.

Section three is 'Partnering in the Mission of God', covering Ninevah's repentance, the idea of team work & playing your part. It focuses Evangelism and Mission and how we should always be true to Christ in our attitude, rather than being fearful on the one hand or insensitive on the other.

Section four is 'Trusting through Anger and Disappointment' - what happens when we fail to see God's purpose for our lives, as Jonah did after winning over the whole of Ninevah. This section emphasises that bad times come with the good and how we should, like Jonah and Jeremiah, be honest with God & provides a good conclusion to the DVD, encapsulating the lessons learnt in a similar manner to 'the One Minute Manager'.

Overall the topic is handled well, and is captivating and intriguing. One criticism though is that there is so little on this DVD, and the topic is handled very briefly and in a themed manner. It would be good if there were more to it & some extras where the topic could be explored in depth. Also the booklets lack questions and don't really work well as group exercise, something which could be easily rectified...

However, for £2.99 a pop, it's quite a bargain and it is a real treat to see a man who is cool, calm and collected in his approach. If only all pastors behaved like him, then I'm sure revival would come as easily as a walk in the country!
