Amazon.co.uk Teacher Review
Kipper's A to Z by Mick Inkpen is a fantastic alphabet book which is beautifully illustrated and will not fail to engage young readers.
The reader is introduced to Kipper and his friend Arnold who find an ant which they put into a box. They then go in search of other things to go into the box and work their way through the alphabet. This is much more than just an alphabet book.
Children will enjoy Kipper and Arnold's search. Each page has the continuation of the story and a capital and small letter and words that begin with that letter. The layout of the pages is imaginative and varied and children will delight in reading this book and finding the words that begin with each letter. The attention to detail is brilliant as the word buzzzzzzz stretches across the page after the bee and the ant makes a reappearance later on in the alphabet. The Zebra makes several appearances, desperate to be included, but he is told it is not his turn yet!
Kipper's A to Z would be invaluable to anyone who is helping their child to learn the alphabet and letter sounds and the text means that it will still be read long after children have mastered the alphabet. This book would be suitable for 4-7 year olds and it deserves a place on every bookshelf and is sure to become a battered well-loved book. --Amanda York

Customer Reviews
The best A-Z book ever written!
It was wonderful to find a children's A-Z book that would hold the attention of a young child for the whole of the book - particularly a 2 year old! The story layout, using some favourite characters, with Mick Inkpen's wonderful illustrations is a joy for both child and adult alike. The emphasis of the order of the alphabet, particularly with 'z' coming at the end of the alphabet, is vital for children and made this something easy to remember for a young child.
Favourite with mum too!
Kipper's A to Z is a delightful book which unlike most children's alphabet books doesn't take itself too seriously. It follows Kipper and Arnold through their world while they search for creatures to put in their alphabetical zoo box (unsuprisingly, the enormous elephant won't fit) cheating horribly along the way (X is for Xugglybug?!). It even features a rather impatient zebra who just won't wait until the end of the book. This had me laughing as much as my two-year-old.
The illustrations, as you would expect for Mick Inkpen, are superb - simple yet detailed enough to delight even after the hundredth read. From an educational point of view, all the words chosen fit nicely with the phonetic sounds of the alphabet which so refreshing after the last alphabet book we bought which had a is for ape and g is for giraffe - doomed to confuse from the start.
We originally got this book from the library, but it soon became apparent that it was one that needed to be a permanent fixture on the shelves.
Great value for this bigger than average `A-Z'
from Kipper and friends, with more dimensions than first expected!
It begins with an Ant, continues with a Bee who `buzzes' across the `Bb' page with zzzzzz also being appropriate as he buzzes off and away on the `Cc' page.......to reappear in `Zz' on the last page, where Arnold's `little ZOO' has accumulated!
This delightful book begins with an adorable page with Kipper telling the Zebra that he doesn't need him until much later!
Undaunted, the Zebra hopefully reappears on other pages!
In our Library group, the Zebra is a hero not only with the children who are eager to find where he next appears but also with the teachers as it surreptitiously portrays the subtle message that `he does get his turn', at the right time!
(rather like putting your hand up and waiting, in the case of older children!)
From the back cover:-
`L is for Lots of Ladybirds.
But what can Kipper find for Arnold that begins with X?'
Large paperback format with 60 high quality shiny pages, with the usual endearing illustrations, in the popular 2-page spread.
Letters are shown in their capital and lower case form in large, bold text followed by the main example of a word beginning with the appropriate letter, followed by a relevant sentence or two.
Example of text:-
`This is Kipper's little friend, Arnold.
Arnold has found an ant.
Aa is for ant.
And Arnold.
Bb is for box.
And buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
They put the ant in the box, and followed the bumblebee.
It flew away.
`Let's find something beginning with C,' said Kipper.
But the caterpillar had already found them!
Cc is for Crawly caterpillar........'
And so the story continues, with the duo finding an occasional problem, such as the elusive ant, or the chosen `item' being a little too large for their box, ..e.g. the duck ......or the enormous elephant! In the latter case, `Ee' is also for empty, as Arnold accepts that the elephant is not going to go in his box!
One of the best A to Z books I have come across and a must for Kipper fans.... but possibly the best introduction to Inkpen's lovable dog, if a first purchase.
