We live in an age of waffle, mumbo-jumbo and bad thinking. We're forever being fed dodgy information by so-called experts, scientists, opinion-makers, politicians, journalists and jumped-up little graduates. Their combined bad thinking includes:
* the idea that no one should win in running races at school, in case the losers get upset
* the idea that owning a house in France (France!) is a decent way to spend your money
* the idea that we should all talk about our feelings and that would make things better
* speed cameras
* mineral water
* hummus
* and the fact that everyone reckons they've got asthma.
Get a grip!
Why do we believe this nonsense? Because, as a nation we've forgotten the basic elements of common sense. Thank God then for Al Murray. He's here to put good old fashioned British common sense back where it belongs.
This book brings together the wit and wisdom of the Pub Landlord, and the collective thoughts of the locals at Al's pub. Together they speak for generations of down-to-earth, normal, hard working, honest, sensible, normal, law abiding, tax paying (ish), normal, hard working, honourable, decent, reasonable people. British people.

great book ideal for blokes !
This is one of the funniest things I have ever read !. I have seen al murray on stage a few times, great stand up, always funny, but I wasn't sure how it would work in a book. He hasn't been a great success on TV (time gentleman please !) so I thought the book would be rubbish as well. However it is far from that, the 'how to make a tom cruise movie' i wet myself. The 'is your pub a wine bar' is so funny I can't help checking when I go to a new pub. The historical stuff that Al does, is all presented here
Great book well written and obviously has heaps of his own work (read the last page !)
I would highly recommend as an xmas present for anyone who likes clever comedy, I can't put it down !
Back off Russell.
I have to say I was so suprised by this book. A mate bought it for me as I have seen him live and am a fan of his tv show but normally comedy books are just flimsy one dimenisiional money makers. I have to say this is one of, if not the funniest book I've ever read, literally everything about it is funny, there's gags in the index and even in the legal blurb in the cover. I particularly liked the world explained where the landlord does a country by country breakdown and also the 'Where eagles dare' drinking game, you will never be able to watch the film in the same way again. I'm already looking forward to the next one! Cheers!
all hail to the ale man
Al Murray is a comedy hero of stage and screen, and he is just as funny to read, if this book is anything to go by. The mighty Pub Landlord bellows his opinions forth from every page, and the result is haysterical. I first laughed in the introduction at a bit about how nobody is allowed to win at school sports days any more, remembering the sports day at my son's school where the kids were divided into groups (not teams, heaven forbid) and given jigsaws to do. After that I laughed on virtually every page, so I won't bang on about indivual bits, except to give special respect to the Beautiful British Pub Grub menu (Pie, Chips, Beans, Pie Chips, Pie Beans, Chips Beans, Pie Chips Beans, Pie Pie Beans, Pie Pie Chips, Beans Beans Beans...etc. Inspired!) The sturdy hardback cover is perfect for stowing atop the cistern, and each perfectly crafted comedy segment takes about a dump to read - what more could you ask for from a comedy book? That's my Christmas presents sorted. Job done.
