Product Description

THE book that made walking on Madeira so popular. In print since 1981, with over half a million copies sold. Pocket-sized and in full colour, the guide describes six car tours (with fold-out touring map), highlighting places where you can stop for a walk or just a stroll to a lovely picnic setting. But the major part of the book is devoted to 100 different long and short walk routes, illustrated with large-scale topographical maps (1:40,000). While keen hillwalkers have long known about the island's mountainous terrain, what has attracted visitors of all ages and abilities is the opportunity to walk the 'levadas' - the paths beside the island's irrigation channels. The Sunday Times said: 'A remarkable paperback which may have done more than any other to change the way its readers spend their holidays; this book single-handedly turned levada-walking into something approaching a craze.' Walking on Madeira is superb all year round. Walks can be done from a hired car or by using the excellent public bus network (the book contains copious up-to-date timetables, one of its key features). The authors spend a month on the island every year, rechecking the routes, and maintain a unique on-line update service to keep users abreast of any route changes since publication.

Disappointing2
There was not much new in this edition and I wished I had stuck with the previous version. It's misleading to call it 'new' when so much of the content is 'old'. It represented poor value in my opinion. Also, some of the walk descriptions are vague and not that easy to follow with great chunks of the routes not described at all.

good for walkers, other look elsewhere4
The walk descriptions are excellent but compared to other Landscapes books I was dissappointed by the Car tours and general lack of background. If you just want to know how to navigate the trails this is fine. If you want tourist/historic background etc and some places to visit then buy the Rough Guide book instead.

Do not go to Madeira without this book!5
If you intend to sit in the hotel all day, you won't need it. But if you're going to Madeira to see the island and appreciate all aspects of its stunning landscapes, then you need to have this book.

The car tours are superior to those described in other guides, and will take you to places where there simply are no other tourists - places that no other guide book seems to even mention exist - as well as to the places that everyone goes to see.

The descriptions for both walks and car tours are so detailed that you can't get lost, every turn you make carefully described. There are detailed maps for every walk, plus careful assessments of how fit you need to be, the footwear you need and whether you need to have a head for heights! If you're not hiring a car, the bus routes to each walk are given.
